Chronological Order of Anna Pigeon Books

The Rope features Anna's first case, making it the first book in the Anna Pigeon chronology.

About Anna Pigeon:

Anna Pigeon is the main character in a series of books by Nevada Barr. She is a law enforcement ranger for the United States National Park Service. The themes of the books are about murders that are committed in the national parks and are often due to issues with natural resources.

Barr came up with the character for Anna Pigeon when she herself was working as a Ranger for the National Park Service. She actually wrote the books when she was still working for the service, but she had to quit once her books became more successful and she had to devote more time to writing.

Some people question if Anna Pigeon is based on the author herself seeing as they share similarities. As well as both being rangers, they both have husbands who have worked in theatre in New York.

A fan had the opportunity to as Barr if Anna was based on her and she said that she was in the beginning, but that she was a much stronger and braver version of herself. However, as more books have been written and the character has progressed, she is now less like Barr and more like a character all on her own.

The Anna Pigeon series has 17 books in the collection. They have spanned almost 20 years, with the first book, “Track of the Cat” being released in 1993 and the most recent “The Rope” in 2012. Each novel in the series is based in a different National Park in the United States of America.

Track of the Cat

Track of the Cat is the first novel in the series and it is where the readers are introduced to Anna Pigeon. She moves to the wilderness after witnessing too much violence and crime in the city. Her life as a park ranger is interrupted by the death of a fellow park ranger in West Texas.

The death is blamed on a wild mountain lion and the hunt is on to kill the lion before it harms anyone else. Pigeon feels that the killing looks more like a murder and she sets out on her own unauthorized investigation. She hopes that she can solve the murder before the innocent lion is killed.

This book was met with a very positive reception. Even today, nearly 20 years after its release, people are still reading the book and giving it positive reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

Barr went on to win the “Best First Novel” at the Agatha Awards and the 1994 Anthony Award. Her career as an author was off to a good start and she started on the sequel.

A Superior Death

A Superior Death was the much-anticipated sequel to Track of the Cat. In this novel, Anna Pigeon is sent to the Royale National Park, off the coast of Michigan. The conditions in this park are vastly different from the condition in Texas. Royale is cool and often deserted and Pigeon thought she would finally leave all the crime and murder behind.

Her hopes are dashed when a routine enquiry leads her to a body underneath the waters of Lake Superior. She must then venture under the surface of the lake to find her evidence and see if the body is linked to an old sunken cargo ship.

Pigeon investigates this murder in her own time and she finds herself mixed up in cases for child molestation, blackmail and smuggling. She also nearly falls victim to the murderer on more than one occasion.

This books was just as successful as the previous installment and it was hooking fans all over the world who wanted to read more about Anna Pigeon. Barr was congratulated for being able to set the scene with her twists and the imagery of the national forests.

The Rope

The Rope was the 17th novel to be released, but it was actually the store that everyone has been waiting for. It is the prequel to the first book, so it is Anna Pigeon, book 0.

In this story, the readers find out why Anna left New York for a life in the wilderness and how she came to have her first case in the National park.

She left New York because she had her heart broken and wanted a fresh start and took a job in the Canyon National Recreation Area. On one of her rare days off, she goes hiking in the woods and then goes missing. Her friends think she has simply moved on because her cabin has been cleared out, but she is actually stuck down a will, naked with no supplies and she has an almighty fight for her life on her hands.

More Novels

Destroyer Angel was released in 2014.

The synopsis for the new book is that Anna Pigeon goes on vacation with her friend Heath, her daughter Elizabeth, Leah, who designs outdoor equipment and her daughter Katie.

Heath is a paraplegic and the idea is that they will be trying out the outdoor equipment that Leah has specifically designed for disabled people.

The trip starts off great but on the second night, Anna decides she needs some time alone and goes sailing on Fox River. When she returns, her friends have

been taken hostage by four men. They are all armed with weapons and their captives are terrified.

Anna has no contact with the outside world and no real resources but she sets out on a plan to rescue her friends before they are killed or flown out of the country to face a life of unspeakable horrors.

Movies or TV?

The Anna Pigeon series have never been made into TV or movies. Barr is not against the idea and on her website she has said that they have been optioned for TV on more than one occasion, but nothing has ever worked out.

She indicates that she doesn’t know how she feels about this because she would hate if she didn’t like the person who was cast as Anna and she didn’t have any control over it. She is not opposed to having the books adapted for TV, however, and it could still happen in the future.

The Rope is not the first in the series. Track of the Cat is.Don’t put that its the first if its 17th, that makes no sense. Also the prequel is more meaningful if a reader gets to it, after the reader has read some of the other books. The way you present it is totally confusing.

We have Track of the Cat first. Not sure what you are talking about. We do have the additional note that The Rope is first chronologically because it is and there are many people who like to read in that order.
