Intense suspense as zombies attack and destroy the world holds a degree of interest and one can only keep reading. Banding and the remaining group of U.S. Navy, the leader Steve Smith and Wolf Squadron are determined to survive and conquer the mainland starting with North America. On the other hand Smith’s teenage daughters are zombie hunters on land and on the sea and are determined to restore civilization on the planet. Relentless enemies are creating an intense adventure on land and survivors have to be more tactical to fight the enemies. With every progression in the tale, more devastating events take place, keeping a reader hooked. The inclusion of the 13 year old girl taking the role of a Marine second lieutenant and zombie killer who is wise and tactful adds intrigue to the story. The 15 year old helicopter pilot and zombie killer employs unusual yet enjoyable tactics to kill the zombie. Using critical evidence based approach to military practice, John explores how the military works, plans, coordinates and fights in one action packed thriller. This information-rich yet clearly written book charts relatively unknown territory with which we can become much more familiar.

The commentary on politicians is simply incredible and explores the fight from a different perspective. The massive zombie clearance on the U.S. mainland and the retaking of large coastal bases is one of a kind. Survivors are in the quest of not only survival but also re-establishing proper civilization. The classic introduction of surviving higher officers who are unable to adapt to new military gives the storyline a more logical perspective. Even after the survivors overcome the first collapse of society and have gained some organization, clearing all the zombie from the world remains a logistical issue.

Under a Graveyard Sky

The novel introduces us to Steven John “Professor” Smith’s family. Being a former Australian military, Steve now lives in northeast United States with his wife Stacey, who is a med tech, and daughters Sophia and Faith. The peace of the society is interrupted once a discovered and un-understood plague begins to affect mankind starting from those in isolated locations and spreading quickly to the rest of the world. The plague is made and spread by terrorists of an unknown ideology. The pathogen is made in the form of an airborne influenza virus that triggers dangerous rabies-akin virus. Since it is placed in train stations, bus airport and other places where people congregate the virus is easily spread. This deadly virus has an incubation period of 5-7 days. Medical facilities are in the quest of finding a vaccine and the plague is fast spreading to the entire world. The stakes are high, the danger high as one cannot know when they are infected as there are no initial symptoms. The blend of actions creates the spark of interest for all readers. Brilliant speculation and unpredictable scenes emerge and one can do nothing but read more.

On the other hand the Smith family has narrowly escaped New York where they have been killing zombies. Any survivor rescued has to be quarantined to ensure they are not infected and they have to choose whether to remain with the Smith family or be put ashore to fend for themselves with their own devices. Ground-based military bases are badly hit. John Ringo employs colorful characters in exploring the otherwise horrific scenes of a military world thereby capturing the attention of all readers even those who have no military interest. Scenes such as thousands of zombies being dispatched on a ship bring a horrific scenario and intense suspense throughout the novel.
