Carolyn Haines was born on May 12, 1953, in Lucedale Mississippi. She also uses the pen names Carolyn Burnes and Lizzie Hart in some of her works. With over 70 books written since the start of her writing career, she truly an iconic writer.

Born to Roy and Hilda Hines, Carolyn loved reading and writing. When asked about her past, she speaks of growing in a small town, uninterrupted or troubled by the strife of today’s modernity. She remembers learning to swim in the river, and riding the bicycle at 2 am in the morning. This is without worry or a care in the world. She describes a fine childhood that shaped what she later became.

In some of the articles she has written about herself, Carolyn Haines also mentions her grandmother. A lady that emigrated from Sweden to the Americas when she was just twelve. Caroline tells of her grandmother as a great story teller, and how she too learned the craft at an early stage. She mentions that her grandmother liked telling ghost stories. In no time, she too was telling the same stories to her friends during sleep overs and scared those poor souls.

Caroline went to school in Lucedale graduating in 1971. She joined college and later graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After that, she joined the University of South Alabama where she received a master’s degree in creative writing.

She became a journalist perhaps following in the footsteps of her parents who were also journalists. She worked with such papers as the Huntsville times, the Mississippi Press, the mobile press register, Hattiesburg American and George County times. For ten years she worked as a reporter and journalists during a period she speaks of as inspiring. Carolyn known for her sense of humor mentions covering a hostage situation in a graveyard. She says that some of these events shaped the stories she wanted to tell. They gave her the skills to investigate and come up with intriguing mysteries that she later put in her books.

Carolyn Haines takes on mystery and romance. The mystery series she writes under her own name, but the other genres she writes under pseudo names; Carolyn Burnes and Lizzie Hart. It is her mystery novel series that notably makes a dear to many. The Sarah Booth mystery series has 15 books.

The first of these bones mystery novels was published in 1999. The stories are set in zinnia, a fictional town in Mississippi. The stories also introduce Sarah Booth, a 30 something-year-old with a keen eye for detail. Her ability to decipher some of the mysteries in this town make her one of the best detectives available but it also put her in grave dangers. To make the mysteries even more interesting, Sarah lives in an ancestral home with a Jitty. A ghost bent on ensuring that Sarah does not lose her family home. It is this ghosts that convinces her to investigate some of the mysterious deaths of two of the homes inhabitants.

This book was followed by numerous other Sarah Booth mysteries that left readers hungry for more. Some of the books that stood out include hallowed bones. In this book, Sarah Booth investigates the mystery of a Doreen Mallory. This is a somewhat famous school teacher and tarot card reader accused of murdering her baby. Now a fully-fledged personal investigator, Sarah Booth decides to investigate, and this forces her to rub shoulders with the authorities in the town. She also has to deal with the feelings she has for the sheriff. In 2006, Penumbra was named as one the best mystery books in 2006 which also adds to great mystery novels greats.

Sarah Booth mystery Hallowed Bones was named among the top five mystery books by library journal. Other books in the series included crossed bones, bones to pick, bones of a feather, and wish bones among others. They have all be well receiving good critical acclaim.

Carolyn Haines has also written other works. Some are fiction and some non-fictional and some short stories too. Some books that intrigued many are Touched and Summer of Redeemer that are part of a trilogy also set in Mississippi. The books are very powerful and deal with the hypocrisies of gender, religion, and ethics. They are books that make you rethink what how you view the world. The books are published in many other languages.

Carolyn Haines also had the vision to create a publishing company. This company would cater for the authors that had a tough time publishing their books. She mentions that she wanted to do this because she had many friends, good writers that did not have their material published. Facing numerous challenges such as distribution, she had to stop the project. She, however, learnt a lot and still mentors young writers who want to follow in her footsteps.

For her great work Carolyn has received recognition and numerous awards. In 2010, she received the Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the year. In 2009, she received the Richard write award for literary excellence. She has also received the Alabama state Council on the Arts Literary Fellowship and has also received critical acclaim for the bones series.

Carolyn now teaches creative writing at the University of Alabama. Inspiring both the undergraduate and the graduate classes. She is very passionate and strong desire to end animal cruelty. She has three horses and states in one of her interviews that growing up; she had a desire to be a cowgirl. Carolyn also has a dog that is also seen in some of her picture it goes to show her love for animals.

She is married to Steve Greene. A marriage she humors is almost consistent with what you would find in a novel. Steve is a captain in the sheriff’s department and as she was doing research for her book. With his skill in forensics they complimented each and 2003 they got married.

Carolyn continues to write and inspire many both through her books and in her life.
