Family Blood Ties is a series of novels written by Canadian bestselling author Dale Mayer. The first book in the series The Vampire Denial was published in 2011 while Vampire in Distress was released in 2012.

Vampire in Denial

In the first book of the series, we are introduced to Tessa, a sixteen-year-old vampire. Her throwback human genes make her an outcast amongst other vampires. Furthermore, she does not fancy the vampire lifestyle, and thus she turns her back on the vampire realm and embraces the human teenage lifestyle such as joining school, finding a boyfriend and engaging in peer activities. On the other hand, Jared manages to stir up something in her blood; he is smart, fun loving and also handsome. Suddenly, Tessa’s dream of having the perfect boyfriend he has always wanted turns into a horror when vampires attack the film theater and abduct Jared. Once more, Tessa finds herself having to choose between the vampire world or the human world.

Tessa is the main character in the debut novel of the series, she comes from a pure vampire bloodline and but has the vampire-human glory which makes her unique amongst her relatives. The relationship with her family is an interesting one, and at one time she is close to her family, and also at times, you could feel like they are from different planets.

Cody plays a vital role in aiding Tessa in her quest to find her friend, Jared and rescue him from the vampire kidnappers. They must fight for their lives as they investigate who or what could have kidnapped her friend. Their search only gets them entangled into a much bigger puzzle than they could have imagined. The debut novel is not only a great tale of a vampire falling in love with a human. It also explores the values of friendship, the strength that a family can offer, the feel of the first or second lover, and the fact that growing up is an uphill task even if you possess vampires genes. Everyone is always searching for a place to fit in the world, and the journey to finding ourselves in life is not always a smooth one, but the rewards are much sweeter.

Vampire in Distress

After Tessa rallies her friends and family to find her missing date they discover a secret, also start a war that causes ripples in every aspect of their lives.

The 16-year-old Tessa find more than her friend in this search mission, she also finds herself in urgent need of rescue. She is imprisoned and therefore has to find a way that she can escape and reunite with her friends and family before the war she initiated takes out the ones she dearly loves.

Cody, the 18-year old descends and the juvenile of his ancient line wants Tessa back by his side – even as he confronts his conflicting emotions.

The 17-year-old Jared, a human who will do anything to protect his people thought his life was over, but he then finds out that his rescuers are indeed vampires. Will he learn to trust them? Additionally, he discovers that the truth that his friend Tessa has been taken too.

The three intrepid souls struggle to survive as the war breaks out around them, a raging war that shows no mercy to anyone. The second novel is fast paced even than the first one, the characters both primary and the secondary are believable, and you will find yourself loving some and wishing they were your real life friends, but also you will hate the villains as well.

The main character, Tessa continues to develop her vampire side which surprises not only her family but also her friends as well. Each chapter consists of several scenes, and reading the book feels like watching a soap opera or a TV show. The novel focuses more on Tessa’s friends, and family, this gives the readers a chance to get to know Jewel, David, Jared and even a lot better. Each character is showcased with different strengths, and each is highlighted pretty well in the book.

The author Dale Mayer ends the novel with a cliffhanger, thus making you want to read the next installment to find out what happened.

Vampire in Design

Vampire in design is the third novel in Family Blood Ties series by Dale Mayer and picks up where the book two left off. Tessa and her best friends are supposed to be heading back to their home, on their way to safety. Unfortunately, she wakes up alone, and her friends have been kidnapped. Now targeted and hunted, she goes on the attack; she is desperate to find her friends and family as well. However, her attackers have an interest in her throwback genes, and they will do anything to make sure that she is locked down in their lab.

Cody caught up in a dangerous maze; he is torn between finding his friend Tessa and helping his fellow captives. He is young to have such a connection developing between him and his best friend’s sister. However, the possible future that they could have will be easily compromised if they cannot bring an end to the blood farm from taking over the humans and his people as well.

On the other hand, Jared is free at last; however, he cannot stop thinking of the ordeal he went through at the blood farm and also the folks who helped him. Suddenly, he discovers something personal and terrifying as well. He has to act as soon as possible even if it means that he has to walk back into a place that he swore to himself never to return. These three characters need to be strong since the war is far from over and they are right at its epicenter.

The third novel in Family Blood Ties series, Vampire in Design is an interesting read. The war between the evil vampires, the good vampire, and the humans continue to wage on. You will love how the author, Dale Mayer manages to jump around from the point of view in this tale of vampires and humans. Each of the three characters is fighting their battle from different fronts and yet blends nicely in the story.
