A game designer as well as a children’s author, the British novelist Gabrielle Kent is a highly versatile and imaginative writer. Creating a line of children’s books, she’s also previously built huge worlds through her game design, something which she’s carried on with her into her writing. Setting up wide and expansive landscapes through her stories, she creates worlds and characters that are engaging and entertaining in equal measure.

Early and Personal Life

Born and raised in North East of England, she also grew up on the Galway farm of her grandmother where she spent many of her summers seeking inspiration. This would then feed into her imagination as an adult, allowing her to harness her passions as a writer and an author. Creating a whole wealth of material, she was always exploring, whether it be castles or old ruins, all of which gave her the ideas she needed.

Focusing on video-games, she got herself an education within this background, as she created vast and expansive worlds for her audience to explore. Building in-depth universes as well as characters, she was able to incorporate her readers into the experience, understanding their interactions with her work. Not only that, but she was also able to make it engaging, a series of tools that she picked up throughout her education.

Getting her first job in the video-games industry as well, she would get a head start on all this, establishing a name for herself. Along with that she would also work at teaching her craft to others, something which continues to do to this very day. Running the Animex festival which includes animation and computer games, she also teaches at Teesside University, as she imparts her knowledge to others.

Still currently writing as well as teaching, she continues to put out work on a regular and ever consistent basis. Working on games on a variety of different platforms such as Xbox, Playstation and PC, she has also published a number of books too. This is something that’s expected to continue on into the foreseeable future, as her writing career grows from strength-to-strength.

Writing Career

Publishing her first book in 2015, she has already come a long way with her novels, setting up an entire series from them. Releasing the novel ‘Alfie Bloom and the Secrets of Hexbridge Castle’ she made her way onto the literary scene with the first in her ongoing series of fantasy novels. Primarily aimed at younger readers, it has a universal appeal that has attracted a large audience worldwide from all corners of the globe.

Known for her main series of ‘Alfie Bloom’ novels, she is highly regarded for her strong and intelligent protagonist. This is something that her many young readers feel that they can relate to, as they feel that the lead character resonates with them. Following the eponymous lead, it sees him thrust into a magical setting, with many fantasy elements that keep her audience engaged and entertained.

Combining intelligence and wit she is not without her fair share of critical acclaim either, as she garnered plaudits for her various efforts throughout her career. Knowing her audience well she has focused on her readership knowing what they want and what they are looking for. In this case it largely children, as she definitely has a clear eye for the genre and how to relate to her younger readers.

Teaching video-games development at Teeside University, she is also a clear advocate for the art-form as well. Clearly understanding how to construct a story and narrative, she fully comprehends the immersive qualities of the fantasy genre. Taking into account her audience she is able consider their reactions to it and how they will engage with the story and other characters within it.

With plenty more to come as an author, she will continue to write remaining a prolific figure in the industry for many years to come. Still sightseeing across England she’s always looking out for new ideas and exciting creative worlds to create and inhabit. Not showing signs of stopping anytime soon, her legacy will carry on, with a lot more books and titles planned for many years to follow.

Alfie Bloom and the Secrets of Hexbridge Castle

Coming out originally in 2015 on the 4th of June, this was to be the first title in the ongoing ‘Alfie Bloom’ series of novels. Setting up the franchise it also introduces the main characters and their goals and intentions for the proceeding set of novels. Brought out through the ‘Scholastic UK’ publishing label, this would also establish the style and the tone of the series to follow as well.

Discovering the truth about his past Alfie Bloom learns that he was actually born over six hundred years ago in what is known as a ‘magical timeslip’. Not only that, but the ancient castle that he was born into he is to now inherit, news which is bestowed upon him by the mysterious Captain Bone after an otherwise boring summer. Inside of him, though, is a magic unlike any other, one that was locked away by the druid Orin Hopcraft, and is only to be used when necessary. Will he be able to keep the secrets from his enemies? Can his cousins Artan and Robin be able to help him? What will become of Alfie Bloom and the secrets of Hexbridge Castle?

Alfie Bloom and the Talisman Thief

Released through the ‘Scholastic UK’ publishing house once again, this was to be the direct follow-up to the first title. Picking up from where the last left off, it continues in much the same vein as before, as it tells of the further adventures of Alfie Bloom. Initially brought out in 2016 on the 2nd of June, it manages to recapture a lot of what made the first book work, whilst also bringing in some surprises of its very own.

Bringing new dangers with many secrets yet untold, the young Alfie Bloom is still trying to wrap his head around his past and what Hexbridge Castle really holds. That’s when his butler, during one late night, is suddenly kidnapped, something which harks the arrival of a dangerous new enemy. Now, with the help of Amy his best friend and his two cousins, he must protect the castle for all it’s worth, otherwise a terrible fate awaits not only him, but the whole of England as well. Will he be able to protect the castle? Can his friends help him? What will become of Alfie Bloom and the talisman thief?
