As of today, author HY Conrad lives peacefully in his house situated in Key West. He frequently splits his time between his homes in the other two cities of America, the New York City and Vermont. Conrad is appreciated for the characterization of the main protagonist Adrian Monk as a police detective in the Monk series. The successful short stories written by Conrad have been able to get translated into 14 foreign languages and sold all over the world. Seeing his dedicated contributions in the television series, the makers gave him the honor of working on the novel series of the Monk television series.

The Monk series written by authors Hy Conrad and Lee Goldberg consists of a total of 19 novels published between the years 2006 and 2015. The first novel contributed by Conrad in the series was released in the year 2013 by the NAL publishing house and was the 16th novel of the series. It was titled ‘Mr. Monk Helps Himself’ and featured the main character Adrian Monk as a compulsive-obsessive police detective based in San Francisco, California, along with another character named Natalie Teeger. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the lives of Adrian Monk and Natalie are depicted as getting back to normal again in San Francisco. But, there is one exception as Natalie is studying for obtaining her PI license, after which she will become the permanent partner of Monk. Before taking the big step, Natalie goes to Miranda Bigley, who runs a self-help program in Half Moon Bay, for a retreat from her. Miranda has helped Natalie with her philosophical work to deal with the recent changes in her life. Adrian Monk thinks that Miranda is a cult and is fooling Natalie. He tracks her down and disrupts her plan of having a relaxing weekend with the intention of rescuing her from Miranda. A long argument takes place between Natalie and Monk, which is interrupted by Miranda, who walks off to the edge of the cliff and calmly jumps off in front of everyone. The death of Miranda appeared to be a suicide as she was undergoing a financial crisis, but Natalie believed that she was murdered. Monk opposes her beliefs and helps the SFPD to solve the murder case of a clown, despite having the fear of clowns. As Monk and Natalie begin to work on their separate investigations, they get caught up in a number of precarious situations. Soon, they realize that if they want to find the clues related to the murder case, they will have to work together as real partners.

The second novel written by author Conrad in the Monk series was published in the year 2014 by the NAL publishing house. It was titled ‘Mr. Monk Gets on Board’ and continued to feature the main characters, Adrian Monk and Natalie Teeger along with Lieutenant Amy Devlin and Leland Stottlemeyer. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Adrian Monk is shown as getting uneasy because of the changes happening in his life. On top of that, Natalie Teeger obtains her P.I. License and becomes his boss technically. He seems to be unable to accept this fact easily. He even cannot see Natalie going on to attend a business seminar without him at sea, even if he has to spend a week on a cruise with her. Soon, Monk finds himself in an anxious storm being among the obnoxious kids and choppy waters. Luckily for him, the cruise director named Mariah tries to make the things smoother for him. Soon, the man overboard alarm is pulled and crew members of the cruise find the dead body of Mariah from the water. The ship’s doctor examines her dead body and concludes that she was drunk and her death was accidental. However, Adrian Monk does not seem to be convinced as he knows that she was having an affair with the captain of the cruise. He suspects that Mariah was pushed overboard by someone. Monk and Natalie are asked by the captain to look into the mysterious vandalism on board after which Monk begins to investigate the death of Mariah as a murder. Just like the previous novel of the series, this novel too became successful as an original mystery novel. The characterizations of Adrian Monk as a compulsive and obsessive detective and Natalie Teeger as a private investigator and Monk’s boss, was liked by many readers. They also praised author Conrad for his unique style of writing the mystery plots. Author Conrad received great reviews from one and all, and this encouraged him to write more interesting novels in his future writing career.
