About James Dashner:

Born in Austell, Georgia on November 26th 1972, James Dashner is the well known author of books for young adult readers as well as writing some adult novels. After he graduated from Duluth High School in 1991 he attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Degree in Accounting. He originally worked in finance before deciding to turn his hand to writing.

Dashner knew he wanted to be a writer very early on. An avid, even obsessive reader, he would read anything that he was able to get hold of from The Lord of the Rings to The Hardy Boys. His inspiration comes from the countless books that he has read the many TV programs and movies that he had seen over the years. Lord of the Flies as well as Ender’s Game where huge influenced on his The Maze Runner.

His writing has won him many accolades, with his book The Maze Runner sitting on the New York Times Bestseller list for a year. Other awards he has won are NY State Charlotte Award, Kentucky Bluegrass Award, Missouri Truman Readers Award the New Hampshire Isinglass Teen Read award among others.

The theme of his Young Adult Novels is fantasy and science fiction. Probably the better of his known works are The 13th Reality series and The Maze Runner series.

The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner series consists of four novels, beginning with the Maze Runner and followed by The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure and finally The Kill Order. This series of novels revolve around the end of human civilization and a loss our a moral compass leading to confusion.

In The Maze Runner which is book one, the Gladers, a group of kids who like him are alone, are trying to retain a sense of normalcy which they think that they may possibly remember. They do they by hanging on to rules of their microsociety.

Book two, The Scorch Trials, sees them pushed out of their comfort zones after being forced to fight for their lives and all the while search for answers.

The third book in the Maze Runner series, The Death Cure, continues follwoing the Gladers as they make a final decision which can lead to either life or death.

The fourth and final novel in this series, Prequel: The Kill Order, takes the reader back to how the Gladers got where they are and the fall of mankind as they know it.

These novels speak of double crossing, survival of the fittest and total chaos. The decisions that need to be made by The Gladers, grow more difficult and quite often don’t pay off as hoped.

The 13th Reality Series

Book one in The 13th Reality Series; The Journal of Curious Letters, follows Atticus Higginbottom otherwise known as Tick who is your normal every day 13 year old boy. That is until he gets a letter foretelling him of events which could be the destruction of reality.

The Hunt for Dark Infinity is number two in the series. People from all Realities are going totally insane and people are just disappearing. There is a clue that there is a new weapon being worked on but Tick is unsure how to stop this from happening.

Book three, The Blade of Shattered Hope, sees things change for Tick. He is being schooled in science but just when he starts making any progress the Blade Of Shattered Hope is created and Tick, Sato, Paul and Sofia have a dangerous task to complete that they cannot fail.

The Void of Mist and Thunder is the fourth book in the series and will be released in stages.

Dashner’s dream came true when he found out that The Maze Runner was to made into a motion picture. Due to hit theaters in February, this movie will be highly anticipated by Dashner fans. He has been lucky enough to be involved in the movie project. Giving feedback, meeting the actors and he will also make an appearance in the film.

James Dashner created Jimmy Fincher in 1998. Believing that the story was a horrible attempt at writing he gave up and decided to start again by writing a simple outline with turned into a book map. Eventually he came up with a coherent story. He sent off letters to any agent or publisher that he could find. The rejection letters started rolling in, not giving up he sent off more letters to three small publishing companies. Cedar Fort, a publishing company owned by the Church of the Latter Day Saints finally expressed an interest. They eventually published him and the rest as they say is history.

By writing these books for kids and young adults Dashner feels he can inspire them to accomplish their dreams by relating to them how difficult it was for him to get published and encouraging them not to give up, much like the characters in his books.

The author is extremely popular on the speaking circuit and spends a lot of his time visiting schools. He has a reputation for being an amusing speaker and particularly loves speaking at schools. Dashner tries to make the event fun and using any ideas that the kids have, turn them into a story.

He advises people who are thinking or trying to get a book published is to know who to send it to. After making sure that this is the best that your book can possibly be by getting plenty of people to read it and critique is, James says, to find the book Writers Market. His other advice is don’t print out your whole manuscript and mail it to every possible person in the book. Sort out your 10 – 20 top publishers that match your genre and send off your query exactly as they instruct. If it worked for James Dashner it must be a good way to do things.James Dashner currently resides in the Rocky Mountains with his wife, Lynette. He has four children, which he makes sure he spends as much time as possible with. In his spare time the author enjoys going to the movies, reading, going to the theater and his overall favorite thing, anything to do with sport. He also enjoys really good TV shows and show skiing.
