The protagonist of the book in a detective constable named Maeve Karrigan who is an ambitious young woman trying to do good. There is an enigmatic killer in the city who has been given the name The Burning Man by the media. This murderer has killed four women by beating them and then set their bodies on fire. This incident happened near the areas of London’s parks and while the city and the police were trying to make out how did this happen; a fifth murder occurs. Maeve Kerrigan is trying her best to make an impression on the murder task force. The male colleagues in her team think that Maeve is weak because of her empathy, but Maeve thinks differently. According to Maeve if she goes to the grieving family friends of Rebecca Haworth, the latest victim, she can learn about her and that can help her to bring the murderer of Rebecca and the other four women to justice. But the real question that arises now is how to catch someone whose face has not been seen by anyone and when there is no evidence left about the killer? The story of the book has also been narrated by Rebecca’s best friend Louise. Maeve goes very deep into the life of Rebecca and as far as in the university days at Oxford. She is trying to put all the pieces together to find out what might have happened on that winter night that caused her to be burned so violently. The plot written by Irish author Jane Casey is brilliant with all the materials that are required to make a book really good and exciting to read.

The second novel in the Maeve Kerrigan series written by the Irish author Jane Casey is ‘The Reckoning’ and was published by Ebury on 1st October of the year 2011. The Irish Times described the book as “a well-crafted mystery” and Maeve Kerrigan, a detective constable is trying to find out the man who killed two pedophiles. In this book Maeve has moved to a bad apartment, which is by the way not the first time this has happened, and the personal life of Maeve is also not the best. The new superior that she’s got now is also not good and amidst this someone is killing child abuse offenders. The public considers the killer as a hero who kills a pedophile and even the police doesn’t give much priority to these murders of pedophiles. But this is not the case with Maeve Kerrigan. According to her no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands. The mystery of the story totally changes halfway and only specific people are being murdered and there has to be a reason for this. Suddenly a young girl goes missing and now Maeve has to track her down as soon as possible. The violence of the killer of the pedophiles keeps escalating and now DC Maeve Kerrigan must decide how far is she ready to go in order to put the killer behind the bars.
