JoAnna Carl is the pseudonym used by the famous American author and a multi-published author of mystery and thriller genres, Eve K. Sandstorm. She was born on January 01, 1936 in the State of Oklahoma, The United States. Author JoAnna likes to write about the shores of the Lake Michigan and has written the plots of most of her novels around its shores and hence, she has been reviewed as a regional writer by the Michigan Newspapers. The other place that she likes very much to write about is the Southwest Oklahoma. She has even won an award in the best book of the year category for one of her books which had the Oklahoma setting. It is said that author JoAnna is an Oklahoman by her roots as she was born there as well as the previous 5 generations of the family of her mother. Her father and both of her grandfathers ran the oil business in the city, which was considered to be the backbone of the economy of the Oklahoma city at that time. Author JoAnna is the member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the place where one of her grandmothers was born. JoAnna even graduated from the University of Oklahoma, just like 7 other members of her family.

A couple of mystery series written by JoAnna, namely Down Home mysteries and the Nell Matthew mysteries are set in Southwest Oklahoma on a ranch and on the Southern Plains around Oklahoma. Both the mystery series’ are semi hard-boiled and perfectly depict the lives of people in the mid-size city of Oklahoma. The family of author JoAnna’s husband are the residents of Lake Michigan and own a cottage on the west coast of the city near the Fennville, Douglas and Saugatuck towns. For the 40 years, she regularly visits the place every summer along with her husband, children and grandchildren. They enjoy a small vacation of a couple of weeks to around 3 months in the community of Pier Cove. Author JoAnna has said the region is full of lush orchards, gorgeous beaches, beautiful Victorian houses and thick woods that are a pleasure to watch. She became so much attached to the beauty of the place that she began describing them in her novels. She even came up with a cozy mystery series set in a resort town in West Michigan on the demand of her editor. She also described the neighboring towns of South Haven, Ludington, Holland, Muskegon and Manistee. In the series, she depicted the main protagonist as the seller of luxurious and luscious bonbons, molded chocolates and truffles. She also chose the protagonist to be a female lead as she is aware of the fact that most of the ladies in West Michigan carry out the chocolate business for their livelihood. She has described them as wealthy summer people of the resorts of West Michigan.

JoAnna had used her real name, Eve K. Sandstorm for writing all her previous novel series, but her editor had requested her to use a pen name for writing the Chocoholic Mysteries. Hence, she used the middle names of her children, Betsy Jo, Ruth Anna and John Carl to come up with the pseudonym ‘JoAnna Carl’. And because of her closeness to both Oklahoma and Lake Michigan, she became a famous regional writer in both the regions under the names of Eve and JoAnna. Before becoming a notable author, JoAnna graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in journalism and attended the Creative Writing Program at the university. After graduation, she began working as reporter, columnist and editor in the newspaper business and spent more than 25 years of her life. Then she decided to take an early retirement and become a full-time writer of fiction. JoAnna lives along with her husband David Sandstorm and her 3 grandchildren and divides her time between her homes in Michigan and Oklahoma. One of the daughters of JoAnna is a CPA and the other one works in a chocolate company. She helps JoAnna to develop the plots of the Choholic Mysteries by providing her important inside information about the chocolate industry.

The ‘Chocoholic Mysteries’ written by JoAnna Carl consists of a total of 15 novels, which were published between the years 2002 and 2014. The first novel of the series was published under the title ‘The Chocolate Cat Caper’. It was published by the Mystery Guild Collection publishing house in the year 2002. The plot of the novel is set in Warner Pier, Michigan, United States and revolves around the lives of the main characters Lee McKinney and Joe Woodyard. In the opening plot of the novel, Lee McKinney is introduced as a 28 year woman, who has given up her initial career as a Texas trophy wife and has started working as the account manager for her Aunt Nettie’s successful chocolate business in the resort town of Michigan, Warner Pier. However, soon she begins to realize that her new life is not an easy one as she lands herself in trouble every now and then. A woman named Clementine Ripley, who is the defense attorney of the town, is a very notorious person and is hated by everyone. She decides to throw a party and asks for custom made chocolates worth of thousands of dollars, some of which should compulsorily be made in the image of her favorite cat. Lee does everything as asked by Ripley, but her success turns bitter when someone adds cyanide in one of her chocolates which gets eaten by Ripley. Lee and her Aunt Nettie become the prime suspects of the crime. But, Lee decides not to let go the killer, so she starts investigating on her own. She strives hard to find the one who tampered with her aunt’s chocolate recipe and put him behind the bars.

The second novel of the series was published in the year 2002 by the Signet publishing house. The title of the second novel was ‘The Chocolate Bear Burglary’. The plot of the novel continues to show the new life of the main protagonist, Lee McKinney as the bookkeeper of her aunt’s chocolate business in a resort town of Michigan after leaving her troubling husband back in Texas. It is the time of winter in Michigan and it does not feel like good things are going to happen. Aunt Nettie and Lee McKinney find themselves lucky that a teddy bear promotion is going to take place in Warner Pier, as a result of which many tourists will flock in for the occasion. This will mean that their chocolate shop TenHuis Chocolade will have a huge sale. In order to decorate their shop, Lee’s friend Gail, who is an antique’s dealer gives them a few precious chocolate molds. However, his shop gets looted in a burglary and Gail is killed by the burglars. According to the investigations, the police comes to the conclusion that Lee’s troubled stepson is the main accused of the murder. Lee believes that her stepson has not committed the crime and sets out once again to solve the crime herself and clear the name of her stepson. However, in her attempt she unveils several long-hidden family secrets which are more disturbing than the crime.

She (Carol Clark)gets annoyed about speech and anxiety problems. Try compassion for the millions of people who suffer from disorders caused by everything from anxiety to brain injuries and disorders. Wow sounds just like the people Lee dealt with growing up and in adulthood shaming her for something she cannot control.

    Dear Ms. Carl,

I have just recently started reading your Chocolate mystery books. I do like them. Having read so many different authors mystery books I have to tell you that these books bother me in the way Lee stumbles with the words. I find it annoying when reading. I am sorry to say this but don’t know why you had added this to your stories. I haven’t read the Eve Sandstrom books but will after finishing these. Thank you for your great stories.
