Josie Brown is an American writer that hails from San Francisco, California, which also doubles up the setting for most of her novels. She is best known for the Housewife Assassin series of novels, the first of which is “The Housewife Assassin’s Handbook” that was published in 2011. With over a million copies of her romantic suspense novels sold to date, she is one of the most successful novelists in the genre. Officially publishing with Harper Collins and Simon & Schuster, she also sells her novels in kindle on iBooks and on Amazon, where she has held the number one spot in sales on several occasions. Apart from the highly successful Housewife Assassin’s Handbook series, she has also written the True Hollywood Lies series, The Baby Planner, The Candidate, and the Totlandia series. In 2012, Jerry Bruckheimer optioned her novel, “Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives” for NBC-TV. She has also written three nonfiction works about relationships.

As a journalist, she has written many feature articles and conducted a series of celebrity interviews that have been in some of the most notable publications and websites, including SingleMindedWomen.com, Divorce360.com, Askmen.com, Yahoo, AOL, Complete Woman magazines, Redbook, and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate International. Her debut work was a non-fiction book about how to get a husband, which she ironically co-wrote with her husband. Both Josie and her husband have been involved in relationship trends journalism for many years and hence writing “Marriage Confidential: 102 Honest Answers to the Questions Every Husband Wants to Ask and Every Wife Needs to Know” was not that hard of a task. This was not the first time they were working together given they were the editors of the syndicated self-help newspaper column “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” written by John Gray. Feeling they had a lot of insight on making a relationship work, they wrote the novel and gave it to friends to appraise. It turned out that one of them was an employee for a literary agent, who after reading the novel immediately called her up and offered her a book deal.

Nonetheless, Josie Brown had always dreamed of becoming a fiction writer ever since she read her first chick lit novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary”. The novel had all the essential elements of a romantic suspense that she had always loved growing up. The heroine is a determined girl who has the best friends in the world, a good guy, and a little bit quirky temperament whose story line comes to a happy ending as she gets all that she deserved. Going back to her childhood, she had also been influenced by “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, who remains one of her favorite authors. Coming back from the hospital after getting her first child, she knew she wanted to write and got down to it immediately. But motherhood proved to be too much for the budding author and she only managed to present her first nonfiction work “Hollywood Hunk” in 2005, fifteen years after starting out. Since she now had a literary agent having published several nonfiction works, it was easy to pitch the idea for the novel whose plot line was based on her experiences writing about celebrities for a Hollywood magazine. She got a two-book deal with her publisher and has never looked back since.

The Housewife Assassin series of novels by Josie Brown is an intriguing, sexy, and fun read that would have any mystery suspense reader on the edge of their seat. Reminiscent of the movie “Mr. Mrs. Smith”, the novel’s chief protagonist Donna is a housewife with some serious skills. For her neighbors in her gated Los Angeles suburb, she is nothing more than a woman who five years earlier had lost a husband and now has to take care of three children on her own. What they do not know is that after her husband’s mysterious death, Donna has acquired some skills that would blow literally anyone out of the water. She can cook and clean, but she can also kill, seduce, shoot while balancing that with the act of the being the suburban housewife. With snarky dialogue and super sarcasm, the novels through the lead character make fun of current world affairs, politics, and everything that is wrong with her Orange County government. Meanwhile she handles the suburban mommies opinions of her and her children, and the demands of carpooling without breaking a sweat. The introduction of sexy and well-known FBI agent Jack makes for some spicy seduction routines and some intense chemistry. A healthy dose of mayhem, ridiculousness, and humor make for some of the best romantic suspense novels you could ever read.

“The Housewife Assassin’s Handbook” the first novel in the highly popular The Housewife Assassin series introduces Donna Stone, a woman that works as an undercover agent for the government while pretending to be a normal suburban housewife. She decided to become an agent after her husband Carl, who was an undercover government agent, is blown up by Quorum, a terrorist organization on the day that Donna was giving birth. Upon his death, Carl left an important item taken away from Quorum that they now desperately need back. She joined the black ops organization that her husband worked for, and is now a ruthless practitioner with killer instincts to take out terrorist, rogue dictators, Russian mob bosses, Chinese Double Agents, and skinhead arms dealers.

“The Housewife Assassin’s Guide to Gracious Killing” is another excellent work in the Housewife Assassin’s series of novels. When the Russian president includes Hilldale in his itinerary for his US tour, Donna is contracted as a yummy mummy to offer undercover protection for America’s important visitors that are a target of some rebel group. Now that it would seem that she is getting back control of her life, she believes the time is right to divorce Carl. She is angry with him for putting her life in danger and making her endure much pain with his faked death in the first novel. The novel is much darker than the first as this one is not only about saving the world by finding and killing the bad guys. She now has to protect the corrupt Russian president from rebels that would see him deposed and dead. Nonetheless, Donna is professional and even as she dislikes the people she is charged with protection, she does her job perfectly. The Desperate Housewives style squabbles and make up sex between Donna and husband Jack makes for quite some steamy sex scenes that add some spice to the novel.
