Focusing on the young adult fiction demographic, Julie Kagawa has become the successful author of a number of contemporary and urban fantasy novels. Currently living in Kentucky, she has a movie optioned based on her vampire series ‘Blood of Eden’.

Early and Personal Life

Julie Kagawa was born on October the 12th 1982 and has become well regarded for her fantasy novels and various young adult book series. Currently residing in Louisville, Kentucky she was initially born in Sacramento, California followed by a brief period living in Hawaii at nine years of age. Writing and swimming from early on, she ended up pursuing literature with a passion as she found herself coming back to it time and time again. Even as a child this was her one true love as she was said to continually be found reading and writing, regardless of everything else.

Over the years she found herself working in various different bookshops in order to make ends meet. During her time though she’d, more often than not, be reading the books which all helped provide her with the inspiration required for her own work. This became problematic though when employers didn’t appreciate her continually reading whilst working, so she became a dog-trainer instead. It was in 2010 that she had her first book published; ‘The Iron King’, which was to then see the commencement of the ‘The Iron Fey’ series of novels. She is now happily married as well as owning a number of different pets.

Writing Career

With over twelve books currently released, Julie Kagawa has had a successful writing career so far, which shows no sign of stopping. Penning her first novel in 2010 with ‘The Iron King’, she begun her initial book series ‘The Iron Fey’. In 2012 she started a spin-off series from this called ‘The Call of the Forgotten Trilogy’ with the third book still due to be published. One of her most popular series of books though is her ‘Blood of Eden’ series which features a collection of novels set within a dystopian vampire run society.

The first novel to come out in ‘Blood of Eden’ was called ‘The Immortal Rules’ and was published in 2012. Featuring the adventures of Allison Sekemoto, a teenage girl living in this vampire run world, they follow her progress as she tries to survive in a nightmarish future society. This formula has proven to be successful within the young adult genre and there’s now a film in the pipeline, as the rights have been secured by Palomar Pictures. Winning awards and positive reviews as well, they show no signs of stopping soon, as the series looks set on continuing into the future.

Acting as an inspiration for young writers looking to make their mark, Julie Kagawa is seen as a positive role-model. Not only is this found to be the case with herself, but her protagonists as well in the strong sense of character that they provide. This is only the beginning for her though, as she will continue to progress and grow as a writer.

The Iron King

This is the first novel from Julie Kagawa and it features Meghan Chase, a young girl who must face up to her destiny. Her whole life there has been a feeling that something has been amiss, a feeling that begun when her father vanished right in front of her when she was a mere six years old. The true nature of her fate comes to reveal itself though when she senses she’s being watched from afar by a dark yet mysterious stranger. It soon turns out that this observer is not only keeping an eye on her, but is also rather protective. This then leads Meghan to suspect that things are about to change as her world is quickly turned upside-down.

It soon transpires that she is indeed the daughter of a faery king that has existed in the realm of myth up until now, and that she is to become an instrumental piece in a dangerous ongoing war. Transporting between the realms of fantasy and reality, the narrative travels between this world and a fairy-world named ‘The Nevernever’. It is now up to sixteen year old Meghan Chase to navigate the both of them and fulfill her destiny. All this whilst dealing with a love triangle involving her two traveling companions; Puck and Ash. Will she be able to face up to who she is and manage to save the day? Can she deal with her own innate feelings and desires as she comes of age in a seemingly alien world?

The Immortal Rules

Taking place in post-apocalyptic North America, this book by Julie Kagawa sets up what is to be the world of the ‘Blood of Eden’ series. Charting the progress of Allison Sekemoto, this novel sees her starting out as she scavenges for scraps of food in an area known only as the ‘Fringe’, it being the outermost part of the circle of some city. It is during the night that they’re hunted by vampires who farm the people for cattle drinking their blood. Fearing them she keeps herself from being eaten. That is until one night she happens to die causing her to transform thus becoming what she hates most; a vampire. She must then make an attempt to escape the city hiding her dark secret from the other humans that she’s to travel with as she can’t be discovered at all costs. This means that she has to pose as human as she travels with a group of pilgrims who are searching for a legendary cure to the virus currently ravaging much of civilization.

The virus itself is known as the ‘Red Lung Virus’ and it has killed large numbers of the population, leaving the few remaining survivors to fend of the vampires. Others who’ve been infected have become ‘rabids’ and they’re monsters that kill both humans and vampires. It is a cure to this particular state that Allison must help the pilgrims find. Can she fight off her urges and help find the cure? Should she even fight those urges? This dark world setting was to be the basis of an ongoing series by Julie Kagawa that is soon to be made into a feature film.
