Kami Garcia is a renowned author of science fiction, children’s fantasy and adventure novels genres. Since she was small, Kami was a superstitious girl who grew up in Washington, DC area. She was quite a peculiar person, believing in things that normal people do not. She could actually never sleep in a hotel room numbered ’13’. Since her birth in March 25th 1972, she grew up with a passion for writing and spent most of her childhood writing poetry in spiral notebooks. Other than writing, Kami enjoys listening to soundgarden, watching disaster movies and drinking diet coke.
She studied to the university level and attained an MA in Education and since then has been teaching children in Washington and later in Los Angeles where she was a reading specialists and a teacher too. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband, daughter, son and two dogs (Spike and Oz) named after the characters from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.
Kami Garcia’s writing career began in 2009 and since then she has published many books, the most famous of which is Beautiful Creatures which is on top of the New York Times Bestsellers’ list. The success achieved by this book is quite immense. It has been published in 50 countries and translated into 39 languages. There has even been a film made based on the book which hit the theaters on February 14, 2013. This is a Warner Bros production starring Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Alice Englert, Emmy Rossum and Alden Ehrenreich.
Beautiful Creatures was named as the number one Amazon teen book in 2009 and took the number five spot on Editor’s top 100 list. It was also a finalist for the ALA’s William C. Morris Debut Award, a YALSA “teen top ten” pick, a New York Public Library’s “books for the teen age” selection and a SCIBA award finalist.
This has however not been the only book that has succeeded under Kami’s name. In 2012, she was awarded the Bold Ink Award for her short story on her short story Red Run. This story was featured in The Guardian after its selection as the United Kingdom’s national short story of the month. She has also authored Unbreakable which is the first book in the Legion series which has seen its way into motion pictures production as Percy Jackson, The lightning thief and The Twilight Saga.
Kami Garcia has created a name for herself in the writing profession by joining several organizations. She is a member of Science Fiction and Fantasy writers of America, PEN West and The Horror Writers Association. She works with WriteGirlwhich is a non-profit organization for mentoring and encouraging creative writing among girls. She has participated in many books festivals and fairs in promoting young writing skills to develop. These include the Texas Book festival, LA Times Festival of Books, the Paris Book Fair, Roma Cinemafest, ALA’s Annual conference, Austin Teen Book Festival, Comic-Con International, Southern Book Festival and Young Adults Capitol Bookfest which she cofounded in Chrleston and is director of the festival. She is also one of the founding members of Smart Chicks Tour. Reaching out to upcoming writers is what Kami has been trying to achieve since attaining her success and she is surely succeeding in her venture.
Along with Margaret Stohl, Kami Garcia has written the Caster Chronicles books series. This series is made up of four books and a novella and is classified as contemporary fantasy novel targeting the young. Set in a fictional town called Gatlin in South United States, the series is based in the life, townspeople, witches and friends of the Casters. These books have very many magical creatures from the very first in the series which is Beautiful Creatures to the very last; Beautiful Redemption. The other two books in the series are also characterized by magic and fiction and so is the novella. The second book in the series is Beautiful Darkness, the third Beautiful Chaos and the novella is called Dream Dark.
In Beautiful Creatures, Margaret and Kami introduce Ethan Wate who is the narrator in the entire series. The 16-year bold boy lives in Gatlin but does not like his small town and wishes to move away. He does not have a mother but lives with his father and grandmother but has been having a recurring dream for months. In the dream, he is falling but not alone; he is accompanied by a girl whose face he cannot see but he is sure he loves her. This is very disturbing to him and when he wakes one day during his sophomore year in high school, he finds a new song on his ipod called ‘sixteen moons’ with very weird lyrics but this song later goes missing. At school, he hears the same song being played by a girl called Lena Duchannes on her viola which reassures him. Lena is not quite the popularity seeking teenager but when Ethan almost runs over her with his car and offers her a ride home, he realizes that she is the girl in his dreams. This is the beginning of their friendship and they are able to communicate telepathically. Ethan then starts having visions after gaining access to a locket and the visions are all about Lena’s ancestral origin. Though Lena does not want to accept Ethan’s help initially, she later explains to him about her family which is made up of spell casters. This does not keep Ethan away though but draws him even closer willing to pursue Lena romantically and help her. They research about both their families to uncover the truths about their peculiar families from books and the locket’s vision. In due course, Ethan’s love is strong enough to protect Lena from any evil spirits.
In Beautiful Darkness, Lena and Ethan have to deal with the death of Lena’s uncle, Macon who dies as she tries to save Nathan in the Beautiful Creatures end who had been stubbed by Lena’s mother’s dark spirit Sarafine. In this book, Ethan meets Liv at his job in the library after they are through with high school. This causes chaotic responses from Lena who starts spending almost all her time with her evil cousin Ridley. Ethan later realizes that his mother and Macon were lovers from his visions. There are so many past revelations in this book but in the final chapters, Ridley loses all her powers.
All these books incorporate magical creatures, suspence, continuity and an intriguing story line of two teenagers whose love conquers even the divide that has existed between the two families for generations.
