Kate Kingsbury is one of the three pen names given by the novelist Doreen Roberts Height, who is British by birth and works in the genre of Romance, and Mystery & Thrillers. She was born on October 24 in London, England and that was the time of world war II. Most of the wartime of her childhood was spent in London in places like air raid shelters and school. Her art of storytelling started during the time of war. When everyone got scared because of the noises outside, she used to start telling stories and this went on and became a regular. Her first story was printed when she was 8 years old and it was printed in the British National Newspaper. After that the second one came when she was in her late fifties. In between these years she was working along with her sister on the stage, which was a short career and after that she emigrated to the United States. Thus her stage career came to an end, but still on the British night of every month she used to sing and play piano at an English-style local pub. Apart from this she has worked as an executive manager, office manager, an accountant, a receptionist and also a salad maker in some restaurant. When the first prototype of the computer came on the market she worked on that too. In 1968 her son was born and she stayed home for few months at that time and her interest in writing was renewed. In 1987, Silhouette Books accepted her first manuscript and in this served as the beginning of her new career.

The first book that author Kingsbury wrote was on a typewriter. She often says that she is writer today because of the computers. She says that only a few people had access to chat room back then and it included writers, business people, etc. Chat room came into her life as a salvation when her thirty year marriage ended. She agrees that chat room was the place where she found companionship that brought her friendship and in the end finally love. She used to live on the west coast and her new love on the east and this was during 1993 and the usage of the computer was charged per minute. Soon their phone as well as computer bills together started to cross $1500 each month and then they decided they should get together as it would be cheaper. At the airport in Portland of Oregon, they met for the first time and a year later they got married in Las Vegas. Cozy mystery novels have been written by her in the pen name of Kate Kingsbury and also in the pen name of Allison Kinsley and Rebecca Kent she has written many mysteries. She uses her birth name of Doreen Roberts to write romance novels and has published for Harlequin/Silhouette more than 26 novels. In 1987 she became a published author after writing Gambler’s Gold that was a romance novel written under Doreen Roberts, her real name. In 1933 Room With a Clue was published and this became her first novel under the pen name of Kate Kingsbury. Around 35 mysteries have been written by her and the first one being the Pennyfoot Hotel book that was published in 1991. Written under the name of Kingsbury (the Manor House mysteries), Rebecca Kent (the Bellehaven House mysteries), and Allison Kingsley (the Raven’s Nest mysteries) are the novels that are included in the list.

The first book of the series, which was released in the year 2001 has the title ‘A Bicycle Built for Murder’. It was published by Berkley on 1st February 2001. It is about a lady of the Manor House and her name is Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton. It is around the time of World War II in England in the village Sitting Marsh. The village is very quiet and is now faced with scarcity of food and the villagers are in fear of losing their loved ones. Lady Elizabeth is very stubborn when it comes to life and she insists that the life must go on and should never stop no matter what. Every member of the village Sitting Marsh is depending on Elizabeth and she makes sure that everything in the village is running smoothly. This means that from sorting small matters like gossip to solving big matters like murders that happens here and there occasionally is all her responsibilities. Beryl Pierce is a sixteen-year-old girl who is having some trouble with a capital T. Soon below a cliff she is found dead and villagers declare it as an accident. But this is not what the girl’s mother and Elizabeth think. According to them it is a murder and they suspect a jealous acquaintance, a boyfriend and an American Soldier. Elizabeth promises to help, but soon American officers are housed in the Manor House and there is now military murder, and mayhem and she now has a big responsibility on her shoulders.

The second book of the Manor House Mysteries series written by author Kingsbury was published under the title ‘Death is in the Air’. It was also published by Berkley on August 1st 2001. As in the first book Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton has become the first woman to be a leader of the village Sitting Marsh in its hundreds of years of history. The British soldiers as well as the locals take it hard when the Manor House is given to American soldiers to stay. In order to bring both the side together Lady Elizabeth plans a dance, but murder and mayhem take over the village. At the start of this book a German pilot escapes into the woods of the village when his plane crashes. On the same night and in the same woods a murdered body of a local land girl is found. Military from the both sides along with the villagers join to bring that culprit German soldier to justice, but when lady Elizabeth believes that the murder is not done by the young German boy who is very much terrified. This brings jealousy in the village and Elizabeth tries to find the real culprit who she believes is one of them.
