This then becomes a recurring theme over the course of the books, as she comes across a series of other murders, whilst trying to get her own life together in the process.

With the series having run for over nine books so far and counting, this is definitely a franchise that has a lot of life in it. Following her set formula Edie Claire has managed to create an enduring series of books that readers worldwide have taken to over the years. Producing collections of novels and omnibus editions derived from the series, she’s really worked at producing a strong and lasting franchise that will continue for some years to come.

Never Buried

Originally published in 1999 on the first of May, this was initially released through the Signet publishing label. Marking the first title in the ongoing Leigh Koslow series of novels, it manages to establish the initial premise of the series well. Introducing the leading character for the first time as well, it sets up the foundations, giving an idea of the style and tone that was to follow.

Working within the confines of the mystery thriller novel, these manage to build upon the premise, whilst taking it in new directions. Understanding how it works the reader is kept on the edges-of-their-seats, guessing till the very end, as they’re a perfect example of their genre. The themes and ideas are also very much Claire’s own, as they seem distinct to the author and her work overall. Very much a ‘cozy’ mystery, it utilizes its location well, as Claire seems to be able to bring its world to life with ease. Taking place in a small town it manages to bring this to life as well, with nothing left out of the story, everything being used. The location is almost a character in of itself, as it comes to life allowing the story taking place within it to flourish. In regards to the character of Leigh Koslow herself she is a resourceful one who is always willing to persevere whatever happens. Overcoming her own hardships after having been made unemployed, she never falters always keeping herself busy at all times. This is a running theme of the series as a whole, as the reader is made to empathize with her cheering her on.

With her life turned upside down, Leigh Koslow seems to be in a state of turmoil after losing her advertising job, maybe her boyfriend and helping with her cousin’s pregnancy. That’s when she wakes up one day only to discover that there is a dead man in her hammock who has apparently been embalmed. Taking it upon herself to solve the case, she aims to find the murderer and what happened here, all before the killer tracks her down. Will she be able tack down the killer? Can she stay out of harm’s way herself? Are they going to remain never buried?

Never Sorry

Providing many of her now trademarked twists and turns, Claire has effectively managed to create another tension filled mystery novel. Creating a sense of foreboding as it allows the action to build, the story works gradually towards a climax, as it holds the reader in place. With the premise having been previously established as well, it manages to develop and work upon it, taking it in a surprising and interesting direction.

Another ‘cozy mystery’ thriller, Claire manages once again to make it work within the arena of her set format. Knowing and understanding it well, she is able to create a whole universe for her characters to explore and inhabit. The themes and ideas behind it all are also very familiar to her work once again, as she keeps the suspense and tension intact too. Set in a small town once again, the location also reflects this style and genre format as well, something which Claire also uses. The character of the town is allowed to flourish, bringing out the tone of the area, which is reflected within the narrative itself. Knowing the area extremely well, it’s well realized to full effect, thus ensuring that it’s a living breathing environment. The characters that inhabit the town are also very well drawn, allowing them to play off the central protagonist creating a drive to the story. Understanding people and how they interact with one another, Claire has provided each one of them with a backstory and motives that feel realistic. In regards to Leigh Koslow, she is once again extremely easy to relate to, something which ensures that she’s easy to follow as a leading character.

Looking to get her own agency off the ground, becoming a lead partner in it, Leigh Koslow takes up a position at a local zoo. Finding that her childhood crush Mike Tanner is working as a veterinarian there, she soon realizes he’s now divorced. Then his ex-lover and her childhood nemesis turns up dead after she discovers their leg in the teeth of a tiger, which doesn’t look good for her. Who is the killer? How innocent is Dr. Tanner really? Will she say she’s never sorry?

The Leigh Koslow Series

A strong addition to the mystery thriller genre, with a warm hearted center that allows the reader to become more heavily invested. The character of Leigh Koslow is also a well observed one, as it takes the series above the more traditional aspects of the genre, and into something more interesting entirely. Showing a lot of potential to expand in the future it doesn’t look like it’s finishing anytime soon, as the series will continue to grow for some time yet.
