Leighann Dobbs is the pen name of Lee Anne Dobbins who writes fiction using her pen name (the former) and a lot of food and health related books using her real name (the latter). Leighann says that she always wanted to be a fiction writer since age 8 when she started reading voraciously. She says that she tried her hand at writing during her twenties but couldn’t publish a book since she was rejected by all the publishing houses that she had sent her work to. She then gave up and took up a career in software engineering and had a good run at it until 2007 when she got laid off. This is when she had a lot of free time and she tried her hand at a lot of things like web designing and content writing for local clients. She also self-published some informative non-fiction books and found moderate success with them. This is when she started considering writing fiction and self-publishing them. Her first book ‘Killer Cupcakes’ that she self-published in the year 2012 became popular mostly because of the gripping story and its short format.
While Leighann Dobbs may still only be a moderately popular author, she is one of the most successful indie authors of all time. She is one of the few self-published authors who made it as a USA Today best-selling author in the 2010s. While talking about self-publishing she says that almost everybody who loves to read fiction would love to write their own book. It might not have been possible before 2010, but now, anyone can self-publish their book and make it successful on her own. Leighann remains a great inspiration for the wannabe authors who would love to make their mark in the literary world. While a lot of hopeful authors would love to self-publish their books, Leighann says that it is not for everyone. While an aspiring author might be a great writer, she might not know the basics of promoting a book or be inclined enough to learn. She says that a lot of authors including the well-established ones, still need an editor and a publishing house to make their books successful. Also, it is near impossible for an indie author to have a successful paperback selling it through brick and mortar stores around the world without the help of a reputed publishing house. While talking about self-publishing, she says that she is a control freak and that is what made her self-publish all of her books in the first place. She likes to have control of every aspect of her book including the book covers, the marketing, the release date and the price. She says that she is happy to be doing all the work related to her books and that she makes a lot of money this way (compared to what she would have made as royalty partnering with a publisher) as she gets to keep most of the revenue from the sales. She calls her books ‘cozies’ and recommends it to anyone who is looking for a light-read while waiting for an appointment, laying in the bathtub, etc.
Leighann has been writing full-time since 2012 and lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, her dog and cat. She loves to interact with her readers via facebook, twitter and email on a regular basis. She also likes to help out other aspiring authors in self-publishing communities which she says helped out during her days of starting out as an indie writer. While she has published a number of books in the Historical Romance and Regency Romance genres, her Lexy Baker cozy mystery series remains her most popular work.
Her Lexy Baker series are based in a fictional small town with a tiny population where everybody knows everyone by name. Lexy owns a bakery and is close with her iPad loving grandmother. In the first book ‘Killer Cupcakes’, Lexy had just broken up with her boyfriend who cheated on her and opens her own bakery which she had always dreamed of. Everything seems to be going fine for her as her cupcakes are getting popular in town when suddenly her ex boyfriend dies due to poisoning from one of her cupcakes. Naturally, she becomes the primary suspect and it looks like her life is coming to end. She then vows to find the real killer which seems to be her only way to clear her name. In the second book ‘Dying for Danish’, things are starting to work out for Lexy as she bags a huge catering order for a wedding. She is elated and is planning to buy some machinery for her bakery with the money from the catering order. When Lexy is happy that things are going well for her, she suddenly stumbles upon a dead body who is none other than the bride-to-be. She again finds herself at the top of the suspect list for a murder she never committed. Lexy, along with her grandmother and her pet dog Sprinkles, strive hard to find the actual killer.
All the books in the Lexy Baker series follow a similar theme wherein Lexy Baker, the protagonist is having a great time facing a new high in her career and suddenly she finds herself in big trouble for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. To clear her name, she now has to find the real perpetrator in this small town along with her grandmother and her friends. Also, Lexy is shown to love her pancakes, a lot. Leighann says she loves cupcakes and has always fancied having her own bakery. Also, now that she’s older, she is unable to eat cupcakes and these are the reasons why Lexy is a baker and enjoys as much cupcakes as she likes – Leighann gave her character the freedom to enjoy the very pleasures that she had to forgo.
Her other popular works include the paranormal mysteries ‘Blackmoore Sisters’ series and ‘Mystic Notch’ series. The former is about two sisters Morgan and Fiona Blackmoore who discover themselves to be possessing paranormal powers which they use to detect murderers in their town. The ‘Mystic Notch’ series gets its name from the fictional town ‘Mystic Notch’ in New Hampshire where all the books in this series are based in. The stories revolve around a retired crime journalist Wilhelmina Chance who acquires paranormal capabilities after meeting with a near-fatal accident. The paranormal aspects of the series are treated in a non-horror way and add to the detective nature of the cozy series.Book Series In Order » Authors » Leighann Dobbs
