Many people think of many different British writers who are very well known. One writer who deserves more attention is M.C. Beaton. Even though she does not have provocative conversations with talk show hosts, M.C. Beaton is a well written author with years of experience that go back before word processors came out of the development labs. Her detective stories have a bit of light humor around them and she has two ongoing series that she has been writing for years. But who is M.C. Beaton?

Who Is M.C. Beaton?

It is true that M.C. Beaton is just a name that Marion Chesney has been using for years to publish her novels. In fact, she has written over a hundred historical romance novels in several different names. M.C. Beaton was the name that she chose for her mystery and crime fiction novels. With a track record of over a hundred novels that have been written, it is a wonder that more people do not know about her.

What Is Her Story?

M.C. Beaton was born in 1936 in the town of Glasgow, Scotland. Her first job was as a bookseller in the fiction department of John Smith and Sons Ltd. While she was busy selling books, an offer to join the Scottish Daily Mail was accepted. Marion rose to the top, writing reviews for variety shows at first until she became the theater critic. She then left her job at the bookstore to be a secretary in the advertising department of Scottish Field magazine. She did not know anything about typing or shorthand but took a job as their fashion editor instead. That was until she moved to the Scottish Daily Express to report on crime for the most part. Then she decided to become the chief woman reporter of the Daily Express.

Once she had married and had her son she moved to the United States. Her husband, Harry Scott Gibbons, had been offered an editor’s position at the Oyster Bay Guardian which did not work out for him. They moved to Virginia and they worked together in a restaurant in Alexandria. She waitressed while he washed the dishes until they both received new jobs working for a tabloid. Their new job demanded that they move to New York where they worked on The Star. Driving by her anxiousness and urged by her loving husband, she began to write romances. Once she had written over a hundred, she had begun growing tired of writing the same old thing. She started writing her own detective stories. On their trip back to Sutherland from the States, she became inspired to write her first Hamish MacBeth detective story. This spurned her and Harry to buy a croft house in Sutherland where she had felt inspired to write. In the 1990’s, her novels of Hammish MacBeth were adapted by BBC and made into a series. Since her son was in school in London, she waited until he was finished to move to the Cotswolds where she began writing the Agatha Raisin series.

Her Very Popular Hamish MacBeth

The Hamish MacBeth book series has over seventy books in its vast collection. The main character is Hamish MacBeth who serves as the policeman in his town of Lochdubh. It was adapted for television by the BBC where it enjoyed three seasons. Hamish MacBeth the TV series was made by BBC Scotland. It began airing on television in 1995 and was rather loosely based on the book series. Robert Carlyle played the main character. The series was filmed in Plockton, Kyle of Lochalsh, and the surrounding areas. Nicholas Renton directed the majority of the episodes of the short series. The series was later released on DVD in both the United States and the United Kingdom from 2005 to 2006. The only episode out of the twenty that was not released was West Coast Story which happened to be in the first season. This was due to the fact that this episode had too many parts of West Side Story for BBC to place it on the DVD, worrying that they may face rights issues if it was released. Season three was released in April of 2006. The first two seasons had six episodes each and the third had a total of eight before BBC canceled the show.

The Public Relations Officer Turned Detective

Agatha Raisin is the second crime series M.C. Beaton has written about a recently retired public relations agent who recently moved to the Cotsolds from London. In every book she solves a murder but in the fifteenth book she has set up her own detective agency. Her parents where unemployed with a bad drinking habit and had problems with shoplifting. She had a rough childhood where she had to slowly work her way into a public relations firm. She worked there as a secretary until she saved enough money to start her own. M.C. Beaton has been asked repeatedly to allow a television serious for Agatha Raisin. After the dismay and distrust she formed for the industry after they adapted her first set of crime novels, she will not allow them to do so.

M.C. Beaton has truly worked her way through a very interesting life. From her days typing away on typing machines to witnesses the dawn of the twenty-first century, she has caught the attention of millions world-wide. She has moved many times. With several hundred novels under her belt, she has truly been an inspiration to many. Even though she may not have a name that is on the tips of everyone all over the world, she is still a joy to read. Perhaps she will continue to write her stories for her fans to cozy up with next to the fire on a cold night. With the popularity of Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Rasian, maybe she will begin writing another wonderful series for her loving fans to read. One thing is for certain, we have not seen the last books she will ever write yet and let us hope that that day is a very long way away.
