About Maggie Stiefvater:

Championing the Reins of Life, the Award-winning Author, Maggie Stiefvater Develops her Fictional Characters with the Same Kind of Zest.

Background

Maggie is no coward at living life to the fullest. She has lived what she terms a ‘tumultuous’ life filled with ups and downs, ins and outs, wins and failures. Yet a cursory review of her life reveals that she has approached all of her careers and has discovered each of her talents with a sense of renewed vigor and enthusiasm. As a true artist and creative being, you may observe how each of her careers and talents interchanged in a kind of ebb and flow to derive for the world a full synopsis of who Maggie Stiefvater is and will continue to be.

Her background education as history major reveals her curiosity for how the past has constructed the present and therefore influences future. It perhaps inspires her writing style because she often strings together an absorbing tale which has many hidden and undiscovered past acts from which the characters in her stories will often draw. The appeal of her writing style is increased by the depth in which her characters are written. Each of her characters will have a detailed history with baggage and facets unknown to the reader and often unknown to the characters themselves. As each chapter unfolds, we are drawn more and more into the history and depth of her characters as we experience their story as in the present moment.

Stiefvater was a calligraphy instructor. It is here that we may note her attraction to beauty in writing style and acknowledgement of the power of the pen. Maggie has a flair for art of all kinds and weaving together a story of beauty and intrigue may be attributed to the patience she’s learned from writing calligraphy. Calligraphy, which comes from ancient Greek, means beauty. It is the visual art of writing. Calligraphy still flourishes in the forms of wedding invitations (weddings are another area in which Stiefvator worked) and other event invitations. As for Maggie Stiefvater, her love of calligraphy may be used as a mirror into the artistic beauty she enjoys within her own soul.

As a wedding musician, Maggie experienced the joy of new beginnings while expressing yet another of her many talents which brought entertainment and soothing recreation to the souls of the human family. She worked at weddings as the musical entertainment and this may have given rise to many observations of people’s lives unfolding and changing before her. Where do the stories of romance, fairies and forbidden passions come from? Perhaps they were weaved as she observed the audiences before her as she performed for them at weddings.

In every way, Maggie Stiefvater is an artist and so it is no surprise that she is today an award-winning colored pencil artist, playing several musical instruments and writing magical and enchanting fairy tales steeped in Irish music and folklore.

Current Life Style

Currently, Maggie lives in the middle of nowhere (she terms it) in Virginia. She is married to a very straight-laced husband (whom we must presume from her mysterious writing also has a mysterious side). She has two children and two farting dogs. Oh, and let’s not forget the 1973 Camaro (yes, she included her car!) named Loki.

Blog

About once per week, Maggie writes a blog. Here she shares her thoughts and sometimes techniques with other writers and many other readers. Her advice is often peppered with self-analysis and sincere reflections reminiscent of a person who continues to work on her own self development. She shares information in her blog about personal challenges as an author seeking critics who will fit her writing style and who can properly analyze her text. She also shares her processes, notes, next steps and even the title of her upcoming book with the openness and sincerity of a long-time friend having tea and chatting with a fellow good friend. As her blog reader, you will get a sense that you have been sincerely invited into her thoughts, her heart, and even her home. She has accomplished what many authors who are still teetering on the cusp of human interactions have failed to accomplish — She has realized and completely embraced her own humanity and appears to share her own reality without guards.

Books

Stiefvaterès earliest book series titled, ‘BOOKS OF FAIRIE’ is a collection of stories about a sixteen year old girl who is in self-discovery and becomes infatuated with a young man who has been sent on a mission to exterminate her. The book is steeped in magic in that the girl, Deirdre Monaghan, is painfully shy but also a gifted musician who after discovering her true identity can see fairies. The mysterious young man who has come into Deirdre’s life is a fairie. But not only is he a faire, he is a soulless faerie assassin! And guess who is meant to be his next target?

Stiefvaterès books are filled with enchantment, intrigue, mystery, and shock. All are combinations that make her writing style explosive. She has also written a book titled, ‘BALLAD’ about apart muse and part psychic vampire named Nuala. Nuala’s bites have left a trail of brilliant poets, musicians, and artists meeting their deaths at an early age. Suddenly Nuala meets a young, good looking, male bagpiper who is more than she could have ever bargained for. The egotistical James becomes the first guy to ever reject Nuala’s advances. He already has a girlfriend and he is preoccupied with a deadly faerie game with the horned king of the dead. Now here comes the twist. Over time, James and Nuala form a cautious friendship. But as James begins to develop feelings for Nuala, he still has deep feelings for his girlfriend, Dee. When the night of fairies, Halloween, suddenly descends upon the land – James will have to choose during a deadly ritual – which girl to save!

Current Works in Progress

Maggie Stiefvater is currently working on the third book in the Raven Cycle, and has just finished ‘SINNER’, a companion book to the Shiver Trilogy (coming out 2014). She’s slowly picking at ‘REQUIEM’, the third and final book in the Books of Faerie series. She is collaborating on a book about the writing process and a revision with Tessa Gratton and Brenna Yovanoff. And she also has a series of short stories available for free at Merry Sisters of Fate: www.merryfates.com.
