Marian Keyes is one of the popular authors from Ireland who has written a number of well known fiction and nonfiction books. Most of the novels written by her are based on the women’s literature and fiction genres. For her dedication towards the women’s literature, author Keyes has received the Irish Book Awards. More than 22 million printed copies of her books have already been sold all over the world. A number of her books have been translated into as many as 32 foreign languages. Author Keyes became famous worldwide with the success of her novels, Watermelon, This Charming Man, as well as a few others. These books are typically based on the themes of alcoholism and domestic violence. Keyes was born on September 10, 1963, in Limerick, Ireland, but spent most of her growing years in Monktown. She completed her graduation from the Dublin University and obtained her law degree. After the completion of her studies, author Keyes started working in an administrative job, after which she shifted to London in the year 1986. During that period, Keyes became addicted to alcohols and eventually became a patient of clinical depression. She even tried to commit suicide.

A subsequent rehabilitation program in the year 1995 helped author Keyes to regain her self confidence and start her life with a new beginning. Her rehabilitation center was at the Rutland Centre, located in Dublin, Ireland. Author Keyes had started writing short stories at the time when she got addicted to alcoholism. Post her successful rehabilitation, she returned to her previous job in London and also continued with her hobby of writing short stories in the free time. She submitted a few of her short stories to the Poolbeg Press for publication, where the publishers motivated her to develop and submit a full length book. This is how author Keyes went on to complete her first novel titled Watermelon. After its publication in the year 1995, Keyes went on to write and publish 12 more books as well as 3 nonfiction works. Following this, she suffered from depression once again and took a break from writing. When she returned again, she published a food title called ‘Saved by Cake’ in the year 2012. As of today, author Marian Keyes lives in Dun Laoghaire along with her husband named Tony Baines. She returned back to Ireland from London in the year 1997 and since then, she has been living there happily.

Author Keyes has said that she was very much frank about her clinical depression, which is the reason why she attempted to write about it in one of her novels. In that book, she has described how she unable to read, write, talk, and sleep because of the clinical depression. In the year 2014, author Keyes featured on Marian Finucane’s talk show called RTE One. Currently, Keyes remains highly active on the social networking sites in order to interact with her readers. She also likes to keep them informed about the recent happenings in her life and her latest releases. Although, many of the books written by author Keyes are regarded as comedies, they are often set around the dark themes which author Keyes has drawn from her own experiences in life. These experiences include drug abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, divorce, and mental illness. Author Keyes is regarded as one of the pioneers of the chick-lit genre. Almost all the stories developed by her revolve around the life of a strong female lead, who goes on to overcome a number of obstacles in her life and finally achieves the lasting happiness.

One of the successful novel series written by author Marian Keyes is known as ‘Walsh Family’. It consists of a total of 6 books published between the years 1995 and 2012. The debut novel of this series was released under the title ‘Watermelon’. It was published by the Arrow publication in the year 1995. The main story of the book is set in Dublin, Ireland, and includes the important characters of Adam, Anna Walsh, Kate Walsh, Claire Webster, Helen Walsh, and James Webster. At the beginning of the book, author Keyes has described a rather inauspicious romance in which the husband of the heroine leaves her for a lady living in the flat downstairs on the day of the birth of their first child. The heroine is named Claire Walsh and the other woman is called as Denise. Being deserted because of her husband’s betrayal, Claire returns to Dublin with her child in her family’s house. During this course, she seems to have gone through the stages of loneliness, loss, humiliation, and hopelessness. After living a lonely life for some time, Claire begins to feel better and starts living happily due to her affection towards her child. Her life becomes so much better that when James Webster proposes his love for her, she could not turn him down. In return, James gets more than he had thought of. This transformation brings a lot of happiness in the life of Claire, due to which she forgets all the sorrows of her past life. James provides Claire with all the happiness that her first husband, Adam, deprived her of.

The second book in the Walsh Family series written by author Marian Keyes is titled as ‘Rachel’s Holiday’. This book was released in the year 1997 by the William Morrow paperbacks. In the initial plot of the book, it is shown that the first experience of life is not too good for Rachel. Therefore, she decides to move to Manhattan, which proves to be the perfect place for an active and young Irish girl for overdoing things in her life. But, things do not turn up as she had expected, which lands her in an emergency. Consequently, she goes on to lose her job as well as her boyfriend whom she adored her a lot. When Rachel’s family members in Ireland come to know about her situation, they get her back home and admit her to the Betty Ford Clinic for her treatment. Initially, Rachel seems to be hopeful thinking that she will be a joyful time with spa treatments. Instead, what she experiences is a number of group therapy sessions. As a result, Rachel leads to some important self knowledge. In the end, Rachel goes on to find a man who is really good for her. This man helps her to overcome all the problems of her life and start living like old time once again.
