There is something about the Midwest that makes a person dream big. Perhaps it is about apparently endless plains, the vastness of the sky that drives someone to think of himself or herself and the role they are performing here. Maybe that is the reason why so many romantic novels are penned by writers whose origins are from the Heartland. Love stories generally work better on the outskirts where you can feel grass and experience long meaningful gazes, than in the big cities where people do not have time for lunch, yet emotions or God forbid love. Michelle Major can tell this apart. As a result, she gets a lot of readers. But first things first.
Michelle Major is an American author, raised in Cincinnati. Ohio was the place where she made her first steps and obtained her first experiences. She got a degree in Journalism from the Ohio University, but that did not satisfy her. After she finished college, Major decided to embark on a road trip through the Midwest. Roads were her companions for a long time until she set her foot in Colorado. That was a love at first sight. The mighty mountains were a breathtaking environment for Major, and she started working on a ranch, an experience that came in handy later in her life. After the road trip, Major took a job in Human resources and started a family. On one of her business trips, she came across one of the historical romance novels written by Julia Quinn and was immediately enchanted. She became aware of all the storylines living in her mind and realized that she could become a writer, too. And indeed she did.
Major’s novels are romance novels, alright. They usually present a reader with a strong independent heroine, usually a reporter (coincidence?), with rushed lifestyle and not much time for herself. While they chase their careers, usually an opportunity arises for them- the life changing occurrence that will make them re-examine their life. In the midst of this re-evaluation, a young, handsome and smart man will enter their lives. How their relationship is going to end is upon each book to say, but genre aficionados will be acquainted with the outcome. Michelle Major received praise for her writing style and earned several recognitions such as “Top Pick” by Rt Book Reviews in 2014 and 2015 for “Her Accidental Engagement” and “Suddenly a Father”. The latter book also won RT Reviewers Choice Awards in 2015.
“Suddenly a Father” is one of the novels in the “Colorado series”. The first book of the saga called “A Kiss on Crimson Ranch”, was published in 2014. It centers on Sara Wellens, a washed-up Hollywood actress, whose career needs saving. Sara might use saving, too- she lost her best friend’s money due to a bad investment and ended up working as a waitress. Her life went a full circle, and Sara is on a verge of despair when she suddenly finds out that her grandmother left her a ranch in Crimson, Colorado. Sara immediately sees the opportunity to use this legacy as a way to work back her way to the heights of Hollywood, but she is in for a surprise. The ranch is not only hers- she has to share the ownership with a pretty Josh Travers, an ex-bull rider and a single father of a beautiful girl. Travers has his own plans for the ranch, and he is not even remotely interested in selling it, as Sara is. Quite the contrary, he plans to accomplish the goals that he set with Sara’s grandmother, which implied a guest ranch and a home for his daughter. He agrees to buy off Sara’s part of the house, but not before the end of summer when the season is over. Our heroine is not much thrilled with the newly created circumstances as now she has to roll her sleeves and do some work. Josh and little Claire are more than happy to help. Is ranch life going to be too much for a Hollywood diva?
“A Second Chance at Crimson Ranch” is the second novel of the loosely connected “Crimson, Colorado” series. It introduces us to the new characters, however, a single constant remains throughout series; or better say, one surname- Travers. This time, we focus on Olivia. She thought she had figured it all out, a job, a husband, a life. Alas, her husband ran away with another woman, thus causing her train wreck, both emotionally and professionally. As if it was not enough that Olivia was shattered, she learned that her endeavor to renovate Crimson community center is nearly collapsed. The reason? The contractor who was hired to do a job happens to be the husband of the woman Olivia’s husband ran off with. As a consequence, he does not want to do the job. Olivia is in a tight spot- she has to pick up parts of her life, as well to find somebody able to do the job on the community center properly. So, she goes to a wedding where she meets Logan Travers, who came to his brother’s wedding. There are not many pleasant memories for Logan here- his childhood was far from happy. It comes as no surprise then that he wishes to leave the town as soon as possible. Nevertheless, as Olivia learns that he is a contractor himself, she pleads with him to take the job. Logan unwillingly accepts, and they start working on a renovation. Nonetheless, it is more than just a job. It may prove as a life changer for both of them.
Michelle Major, just like most of her characters, is a private person. You will not see her name in the paper. All she has to say, she does through her work. Her characters are there to work. They are not much into the talk. A lot of things are hinted and left to be picked up by the significant other among the long strolls along the Colorado or Ohio. It is the game of love and not everybody can play it. And there we go back to the story from the beginning. The Midwestern air, the solitude and the greatness of nature. It really brings up something in a person, does it not?Book Series In Order » Authors » Michelle Major
