Patrick Ness is one of the award winning novelists of America, who has written a number of successful novels based on the science fiction, young adult, and fantasy genres. He was born in Virginia, United States, but has been living in London, England for many years now. As a writer, Patrick has written for the Sunday Telegraph and the Radio 4 of England. Other than being a novelist, he also serves as a literary critic in the magazine called The Guardian. Most of the novels written by author Patrick in his writing career have been very much popular and due to this, he has been able to win numerous literary awards, including the Children’s Fiction Prize by The Guardian, the Costa Children’s Book Prize, and the Booktrust Teenage Award.

Prior to becoming a full time author, Patrick used to work as a professional journalist and a lecturer. He moved to London at the age of 28 years and has now acquired the dual citizenship of America and England. Author Patrick is particularly well known for his young adult novels, including A Monster Calls and the Chaos Walking trilogy. In the years 2011 and 2012, Patrick was consecutively awarded with the annual Carnegie Medal by the librarians association of Britain. He was given this award for his highly popular novels, A Monster Calls and Monsters of Men. Each of these books was also recognized as the best new book for young adults or children, being published in the United Kingdom. Author Patrick has achieved the feat of being one of the 7 authors to have won a total of two Carnegie Medals in his writing career and only the second one to have won it consecutively. Patrick was born on January 01, 1971 in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, United States. He used to live near the army base of Fort Belvoir, near Alexandria, where his father was stationed as a lieutenant in the United States Army.

Later, he moved along with his family to Hawaii and lived there for a period of 6 years. This was followed by staying in Washington state for 10 years and then shifting to Los Angeles. Author Patrick had joined the South Carolina University and studied the English Literature. After completing his graduation from the university, he began working for a cable company as a corporate author. The first story written by him was titled Genre and was published in the year 1997. Then, he shifted to London in the year 1999 and was working on his first novel at the time. After acquiring the British citizenship in the year 2005, Patrick started a civil partnership in 2006. When the United States government legalized the same sex marriage in California, author Patrick and his partner got married in the year 2013.

Apart from writing novels, Patrick Ness has taught the art of creative writing to the students at the Oxford University and has written reviews in a number of magazines and newspapers. Patrick was privileged to be allowed by Booktrust to become its first Writer in Residence. In the year 2014, he was invited as a keynote speaker at the Young Adult Program of the Berlin International Literature Festival. Author Patrick Ness remains active on the social networking sites, where he interacts with his readers and fans, and also informs them about the release dates of his next books. The books written by him are released in the major countries of the world such as UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, USA, Canada, etc. The list of prestigious literary awards won by him include the Arthur Clarke Award, the Tiptree Award, the Children’s Fiction Prize, etc.

The Chaos Walking series written by author Patrick Ness comprises of a total of 3 novels and 3 novellas published between the years 2008 and 2013. The first novel of the series was released under the title ‘The Knife of Never Letting Go’. It was published by the Walker Books publishing house in the year 2008. The plot of this novel is set in the New World and revolves around the lives of the main characters named Ben, Todd Hewitt, Aaron, Mayor Prentiss, Davy Prentiss, Jr., Hildy, Viola Eade, Manchee, Cillian, etc. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the Prentisstown is depicted as a totally different town from the others. Here, the people were able to hear the thoughts of everyone else in the form of a never ending and overwhelming stream of voice called Noise. Todd Hewitt is introduced as being only a month away from his patiently waited birthday as it will turn him into a man. But, he and his dog named Manchee reach into an area there was complete silence. Todd was able to hear the thoughts of Manchee too, irrespective of whether he wanted to hear or not. Eventually, Manchee and Todd find out that something terrible is hidden in the mysterious town where hiding the privacy seems very much impossible. As they come to know about the hidden secret, they are required to run and save themselves from getting killed by the keepers of the secret.

The second novel of the Chaos Walking series written by author Patrick Ness was published under the title ‘The Ask and the Answer’. This novel was released by the Walker Books publishing house in the year 2009. The plot of this novel continues to depict the same characters as in the first novel of the series such as Todd Hewitt, Mayor Prentiss, Viola Eade, Manchee, Davy Prentiss, Jr etc., along with Mistress Coyle. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade are running for their lives from the men of Mayor Prentiss. Even after getting wounded, the two keeping on running from the relentless army of Mayor Prentiss. After thinking that he will not be able to save her from getting killed, Todd himself takes the wounded Viola to his worst enemy. He gets separated from her and imprisoned, and is made to learn to forceful ways of the new order of Mayor Prentiss. Todd continuously keeps thinking about the secrets hidden outside the town and worrying about the safety of Viola Eade. Eventually, the answers to all his questions begin to explode in the form of a bomb and bring devastating consequences in his life. The novel proved to be a shocking, tense and a deeply touching description of resistance under extreme pressure, which helped it to become successful worldwide.
