This is a book written by L.E Modesitt, junior that contains a series of fantasy novels. The series was published in the year 1991. It derives its name from the initial novel Magic of Recluce which is in the series. The series contains sixteen books which described the changing and in most cases appears to be confrontational. It portrays themes of sexism, ageism, ethics, politics, environmentalism, racism and gender stereotyping. The stories in the series demonstrate a clear progression of true life occurring events into legend and myth. Characters appear in multiple books.

Magic is manifested within the recluce universe. The possible feast of magic greatly relies on the understanding of the user on the interaction between the order and chaos and how they occur in balance in nature.

Novels in the series

The novels in the recluce book series take place within the same universe and all the matter is made up of two forces that appear to be competing. The forces are chaos and order. Naturally, these forces are equally compared and matched in a balance condition. They are seen to represents natural entropy that occurs in natural matter and are balanced by different molecular forces that bind matter into a form that is structured.

It is seen in the book that some individuals within the universe have innate ability to stage-manage these forces, either one or both. It rare for an individual’s to poses ability to manipulate both forces. White mage has that ability to draw the natural chaos on the surrounding area and make it focus into flame bolt. Black mages also has the ability to determine the chaos which spring from deceptive people.

Manipulation of the forces consequently comes with a price. The excessive chaos force that surrounds most mages accelerates the worsening of their surroundings too. It is seen that those wizard who use their bodies to generate chaos have largely led to reduce in lifespan. The amount of chaos he or she can raise is inversely proportional to lifespan.

Generally any human being or animal that is exposed to constant chaos forces which come in contact with an ordered object is likely to experience a burn. The burn is a severity that is directly proportional to the amount of chaos living in creature. This type of contact is usually severe for white wizards.

Manipulation of order also has consequential cost but seems to seem to be more reactionary compared to the one of the whites. Most of the Oder discipline protagonists find ways to harness their particular own abilities for combat use. However, they experience disorientation and even can receive sensory depreciation from the chaotic blackish that results from causalities they inflicted. The protagonists eventually come to discover that the fatal of their disorientation has connections with the amount of chaos created by their actions. When they order skills to correct the worsening situation, the rebounding chaos seem too often cause blindness for a period of time which is estimated with the fatality of the chaos released and for each time it occurs.

In the book of Fall of Angels, it provides brief information of their home origin. It is seen that those beings who possessed the magical ability are all the descendants from two groups of people. The two groups are not native to the world. It explains on the two opposing members who landed on the planet some four hundred years apart. In the series they are referred to as the Angels and Rationalists and commonly referred to as factions. These factions are seen have advanced technologically where space faring people immersed in a prolonged war.

There is a couple numbers of similarities portrayed by the Order magic and angel’s weaponry. The rationalist weapon was completely similar to the chaos magic.

Angel’s stories begin when one of their warships called winterlance is during a battle in a very high energy explosion. The ship and its crews are transported instead of being destroyed, to an alternative dimension which functions no more. This forces the angels to land on the planet that contains recluce islands. After landing on the planet, they begin to exhibiting various physical changes and talents. These changes were colour of their hair, which ultimately become linked to the order magic. In the series, various history tales and legend provide information that a group of rationalists had landed in the same planet some centuries ago that developed into chaos mages. The abilities of these groups are passed to their offspring’s.

Magi’i of Cyador and scion of Cyador are the first two chronological books that describe the operations of the cyador army. The army battles against the cander natives. The novel establishes the one key element of ultimate decline of the advanced technology of the rationalist in the history of cyador. After landing on the planet which was uninhabited, the rationalist managed to invent numbers of advanced machines devices which were powered by chaos. They put in place a number of collection towers which were used to focus on the devices they had created. It is seen that the towers were failing and the empire was losing the ability to maintain its inventions.

In the book of Fall of Angels, the series gives the details of the arrival of the angels and also the founder of the order mages. The series notes two angels named Ryba and Nyla who later portray legendary figures in other novels. Nyla developed a foundation of order magic whereas Ryba is seen to develop a prophesying talent. Nyla is the father of Weryl. In the book of chaos balance, he leaves his place west wind to directly confront Cyador. At this time the fire lances and wagons had completely vanishes and the whole empire was dependent on the chaos mages. The confrontation resulted to the finding of the druids which reside in a magical forest named The Accursed forest by natives.

The story of Saryn is followed by the chaos balance Arms commander. He is the head of the guards and protects west wind from political and military problems.

In the novel of the towers of sunset, cyador is replaced by council of white mages who rule cander. The place is seen to be under threat from a stronger order mages. Creslin who is the son of Nylan flees people from cander and begins a society based on order mages.
