Sarah Graves is a popular author from Maine, Unites States. She has written a number of novels in the mystery genre. Her most notable work includes the ‘Home Repair is Homicide’, which comprises of sixteen novels. Sarah has developed the character of Jacobia Tiptree or Jack as an expert in home repair. From her childhood days, Sarah has been a serious reader and has remained so all her life. She developed her habit of writing short stories and novels by getting inspired from the things she used to read. She wrote her first story and sold it to McCall’s magazine when she was just seven years old. However, she had to face rejection from the magazine as she had chosen the story about a squirrel getting lost in the woods and it was but obvious that a squirrel can never get lost in the woods. But she did not give up her idea of using creatures to feature in her writings. Her literary career took an interesting turn with the success of her unique novels. The central characters of her novel series ‘Home Repair is Homicide’, Jake and Ellie are very close to her heart. She likes to develop the plots of her novels around them and keeps throwing a number of difficulties and dangers on their lives. The readers enjoy reading her style of writing and have been an important aspect of the success of her novels.

Sarah lives in Eastport, Maine in the United States, along with her husband John Graves, who is a musician and luthier, and a black Labrador Retriever. She has described Jacobia Tiptree as trying to remodel her home similar to her actual one in Maine, in the novel series. Sarah enjoys writing her novels from her home as she loves the atmosphere and the feel of being at ease in her home. When she is not busy writing the adventures of Jacobia Tiptree, Sarah enjoys working with her husband in changing the appearance of her home according to her changing taste. She also loves to play the 5-string banjo enthusiastically along with her husband. Sarah began her writing career in the year 1997 when she penned down the first novel of the series ‘Home Repair is Homicide’. Since then she never looked back and continued to write mystery novels full of suspenseful descriptions. She still practices her dream career and amuses her readers with each publication of her novels. Sarah is also fond of gardening and loves to grow colorful and aromatic flowering plants in her backyard. She even loves to do several outdoor activities along with her Labrador that keeps her fit and engaged. Sarah considers gardening and outdoor activities as the two factors that have kept her away from boredom and loneliness of life.

The first novel of the ‘Home Repair is Homicide’ series came out in the year 1998. The novel was titled ‘Dead Cat Bounce’ and was published by the Bantam publishing house. The plot of the novel was set on the meaning of the title, which symbolizes as a jargon for the Stock market where there is a harp drop of the trading price of stocks after a small and temporary rise. It introduces Jacobia Tiptree and her best friend Ellie White as the main characters. Jacobia (Jake) is shown disgusted to find broken things everywhere in her home, which is an old and rambling upper of a house she had bought. Although she is an expert home repair in Eastport, Maine, her own problems do not generally get repaired easily. She regrets to find rotting floors and sagging beam supports. However an even more depressing problem arises when she finds the dead body of a man in the storeroom packed with ice to slow down its degradation. Before this, nothing much had happened in the small town of Miane, which was considered to be a peaceful living place. Jake finds out that the dead body was of a young boy named Threnody McIlwaine. This young boy was a world-famous corporate raider and a billionaire.

When her best friend Ellie White, who is otherwise a quiet and dependable person, readily confesses to have committed the murder, the snowbound Eastport gets crowded with cops and journalists everywhere. However, Jake suspects a possible cover-up by the actual murderer and believes that Ellie has been framed. She begins her stint to save Ellie by taking the matters in her own hand. She gets into the past history of Ellie and Threnody’s families and finds some important clues that could help her to save Ellie from getting reprimanded for the crime that she has not committed. Jake smells possible risk of her life while doing the investigation and is forced to take refuge in her rustic home, which proves to be her final resting place. But, she does not stop in her attempt of finding the real culprit. The novel saw a great debut as it was liked by most of the readers. This motivated Sarah to keep writing similar interesting plots.

The second novel of the series was published in the year 1999 under the title ‘Triple Witch’. It was published by Bantam Books. The novel was once again set up in the town of Eastport, Maine. It depicts the life of Jake prior to reaching Eastport. She had left her son Sam in Wall Street and moved to the unknown town of Eastport, for his betterment. She owns a fixer-upper which is not in a good condition. However, Jake tries to adjust to the new environment and looks forward to repairing shutters and radiators for the years to come. Soon, the peace that she was looking for in Eastport, is lost in a wave of criminal activities. A local man named Kenny Mumford becomes the first one to experience the wrath of the wave. He gets murdered by an unknown entity. Mumbord was never considered as a good man and was an old flame of Jake’s best friend Ellie White. He is believed to have drowned as his body is found on the beach. It is however found that Mumford was killed by a gunshot on his forehead. Several other murders take place in the town as the plot unveils interesting twists and turns. Jake and Ellie try to bring out the truth and stop the crime wave that has caused immense losses to the town of Eastport. The novel was rated very well by the critics and the readers. It sold a number of copies worldwide and helped Sarah to establish herself as a popular author of mystery novels. Her unique writing style and interesting plot descriptions were appreciated by the fellow writers who encouraged her to bring out more wonders through her pen.

is there a list somewhere of all of the characters in Sarah Graves Home Repair is Homicide & the Death by Chocolate Series. I would like that list, but also I have some questions as to the age in the series of Jacobia and Ellie. Seeing as Jake had a 14 year old son when she first moved to Eastport and looking back at her own age in in 1997 when she started the series, Sam was born in 1983 making him 40 in 2023. So that would put Jake and Ellie’s age at least 60 it would have to even be more for Jake. It’s hard for me to believe that she could be running screwing falling down mountains sliding under houses at that age. Just a question I would like a little detail on these characters in her books.

Do you live in Maine and are you familiar with the Minerva statewide system that enables one to request that a copy of a book which is on hand in at least one public library in Maine be sent (at no cost) to your home Maine library, from which you may check it out for three weeks? A great source for the books you seek.
