Shanna Swendson is one of the best American authors in the category of romance. She is best known for Katie Chandler series of novels that began on 2005. Before she became a successful novelist she never imagined that she would turn out to be very successful although at heart she always knew she was a writer.

When she was young she loved to come up with different stories and act them with her friends or her Barbie dolls. She learned to amuse herself by coming up with these stories in her head. Whenever she had no one to play with, she could sit down and just come up with stories in her head of which occasionally got her into trouble for being too creative. She started writing these short stories in spiral notebooks when she reached seventh grade, where she found an old manual typewriter which she taught herself how to type.

Shanna Swendson attended the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in broadcast news and she structured a curriculum that would help her in her future which include astronomy course (this was to help her in case she wanted to write a science fiction), fencing (would be useful to help her in writing fantasy novels), psychology, parageography and interpersonal communication (the geography of the imaginary lands).

After Shanna Swendson graduated she found a job in public relations and became even more serious to look for things that would help her know how to be a good novel writer, through reading books, researching about the novel-writing process and joining the local writing organization. One of the bad times during the start of her career is when she managed to get a live editor who encouraged her to keep writing and to submit to her one of her writings, but instead she rejected and encouraged her to keep on writing .

Although she rejected it Shanna Swendson ended up selling it elsewhere then she wrote two more books. Later on, due to some circumstances she was not able to sell any other book for eight years. After the eight years she came back with an idea which led to the Enchanted book series which is among the best romantic fantasy book series which features Enchanted, Inc (May 2005), Once Upon Stilettos (May 2006), Damsel Under Stress (May 2007), Don’t Hex With Texas (May 2008), No Quest for the wicked (October 2012), Kiss and Spell (May 2013).

The following is a summary of the first two Enchanted book series that Shanna Swendson wrote;

Enchanted, Inc (May 2005) DON’T MESS WITH HEXES.

This is a story of an extraordinary young woman from Texas called Katie Chandler. She has always heard New York is a wonderful and at the same time a weird place to be. Everywhere Katie Chandler goes she sees something that is worth gawking at and this makes her afraid, that she is a little too normal to go to the big city. She always knew deep in her heart that it is going to be a whole different world but did not know how different.

Katie Chandler finally leaves the small town Texas for New York and after staying for several months of seeing different things like people with wings and many more, she comes to discover that she is not really crazy and magic truly exists. This helps her get a job offer through email from the company that is called Magic, Spell and Illusions, Inc. Katie proves to be very special since she can be able to spot easily a fake spell, detect magically disguised intruders and catch the hidden clauses in the competitors’ contracts since no magic will work on her (she is “immune”). She goes for the interview and she begins working in the department of Verification.

The book becomes even more interesting when Katie Chandler learns that her boss is the real ogre and it even becomes more interesting to read when Katie Chandler suddenly has a crush on the head of R&D department who is a bit shy but sexy. He seems to barely notice Katie Chandler since he is busy fighting the evil competitor who is threatening to go to the streets to sell black magic to people, and if the magic community begin to use dark spells it would harm everyone in the world, including the magic people. Katie’s main mission is to save the world and live a happy ever life after.

This book contains enough realism which is seen in the things that take place in the office like when the boss suddenly changes and starts treating everyone so badly, sharing a one bedroom apartment with her two roommates and many more which brings things to reality.

This is a sequel to the Enchated Inc that features Katie Chandler and it starts from where it left off. She is still working in the MSI Company and so far she has seen all sorts of magic than she could ever imagine.

This book focuses mostly around her parents visiting, and since her parents do not know what she does, she hides her job and the magic around her from them. Her mother seems to be also immune , therefore it may be hard for Katie to convince her mother that she is not seeing gnomes, fairies and gargoyles.

Katie Chandler seems to be very irresistible to men, guys are always lining up to buy her drinks and dance with her whenever she goes out with her girlfriends. She always feel confident, maybe it is because of the stiletto, or maybe not.

The story goes on when someone broke into Owen’s office and managed to disrupt some of the top secret files. Therefore, Katie is assigned to go and find out who is the spy, and in this part of the book Katie Chandler experiences the challenge of not seeing magic easily like before while trying to find the spy in MIS. She begins to fear that she may be losing her powers.

Things become even more interesting when Katie Chandler realizes her immunity to magic may cost her life, since the spy has some magic beings which keep on attacking Katie and she cannot see what’s coming for her. She fears maybe she may not live long enough to see Christmas.

In conclusion, Shanna Swendson has managed to greatly combine modern contemporary, fantasy and a nice touch of humour which makes the book more interesting and fun to read.
