One of the popular novel series written by author Tom Harper is known as the ‘Reluctant Adventures of Lt. Martin Jerrold’. It comprises of a total of 3 books which were released between the years 2004 and 2006. The first novel of this series is titled as ‘The Blighted Gift’, which was released by the St. Martin Press in the year 2004. This book’s story is set at the start of the 19th century. At that time, England was fighting hard for its attempt of ruling the waves. The swashbuckling, entertaining, and wonderfully written story appears to be a delight for the lovers of historical fiction, naval fiction, and mystery books. At the beginning of the story, it is shown that hardly anyone returned from Trafalgar without an ounce of credit, keeping their name flags flying high. However, due to the habitual ill fate and some extra reliance on alcoholic beverages, Lieutenant Martin Jerrold turns out to be the one who came with no credit. In the year 1806, he is called to the White Cliffs in Dover and given the last chance for redeeming his reputation. But, before he could reach to his destination and get the task assigned to him, he comes across a corpse near the cliff’s foot. As a result, Lt. Martin Jerrold becomes a suspect of murder. The relief he has is that no one is able to identify the dead body. Due to this, his freedom gets prolonged. But, he does not have much time and is required to prove his innocence as soon a possible. Due to the suspicion, Lt. Jerrold’s superiors begin to distrust him. He feels that he has been set upon by the intriguing smugglers. Also, the attack of the French forces at the sea make the matters worse for him. Now, he has only a couple of weeks to clear his name or perish in his attempt to do so.

The next book in this series was published under the title ‘The Chains of Albion’. It was published by the Thomas Dunne Books in the year 2004. As the book begins, it is depicted that Lt. Jerrold is commanding a prison vessel having several French captives. Being far away from the war, storm and all other disturbing elements of his naval life, he thinks that life can never be better than this. The fact that he is able to have his mistress beside him also makes feel better and relaxed. But, when a passenger goes missing, the life of Lt. Jerrold turns upside down once again. After that, he gets summoned by the first Lord at London and is ordered to hunt down the Frenchman at all costs. Following the orders, Lt. Jerrold sets out on a difficult pursuit, which takes him to all across Britain, from the Chatham marshes to the London slums; and from the Dartmoor wilds to the seaside resorts of Brighton. However, what everyone wants to know is that why the prisoner is so important to the First Lord. Suddenly, people from the ruling government, the opposition, Martin’s friend Nevell, as well as Princess Caroline herself begin to take a personal interest in the case. Following his share of bad luck, bad behavior, and bad timing, Martin Jerrold get closer to recapturing the prisoner. Meanwhile, he becomes successful in uncovering the dangerous tangle of treachery and deceit. He also learns that there are some people who will do whatever it takes to keep the secrets hidden forever.
