Liaquat Ahamed
Liaquat Ahamed spent more than 25 years as a professional investment manager. He worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. He also worked at a New York partnership called Fischer Francis Trees and Watts, where he became the Chief Executive. His career gave him a close up view of how money and markets really work.
Ahamed is an American nonfiction writer. One of his big strengths as a writer is that he digs very deep into his subjects. He uses his expertise to make sure his books are full of real and useful information. Readers often find his work highly informative because of how carefully he researches.
Another strength is his gift for building compelling stories. He takes complex topics and turns them into engaging narratives that do not feel heavy or boring. His way of writing keeps a person interested from start to finish. Ahamed’s books are a good example of how deep knowledge and clear storytelling can work well together.
His work connects with readers around the world by staying true to his own background. He does not pretend to be someone else on the page. His voice comes from years of managing real money and watching global finance up close. That honest, firsthand perspective helps his books feel genuine no matter where a reader lives.
He keeps things clear and direct, not fancy or overdone. Ahamed writes in a way that feels true to his training as an economist and an investor. He avoids unnecessary drama or emotional tricks. This straightforward style lets people from many different countries follow his ideas without confusion.
His work also respects the intelligence of the reader. He gives facts, shows his research, and then steps back. He trusts that readers can think for themselves. That quiet confidence in his own voice and in the reader is a big reason why people worldwide keep picking up his books.
Ahamed has not stopped working on new material. He continues to write and research with the same careful, expert driven method. More books from him are likely on the way. His future work will probably offer the same deep, clear, and engaging look into complicated topics that his past writing has shown.
Early and Personal Life
Liaquat Ahamed came into the world on November 14, 1952, in Kenya. His grandfather had traveled there from Gujarat, India, after stopping in Zanzibar during the late nineteenth century. His schooling took him to Rugby School in England, then to Trinity College at Cambridge, and later to Harvard University.
He led the investment division at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. After that, he took roles as Chief Investment Officer and then CEO at a New York based fixed income firm called Fischer Francis Trees & Watts, which was owned by BNP Paribas. From October 2007 onward, he has served as a director for Aspen Insurance Holdings, advised hedge funds such as Rock Creek Group and The Rohatyn Group, sat on the board of the Brookings Institution, and stayed involved with the New America Foundation.
Using his own production company, Red Wine Pictures, Ahamed helped produce a 2006 movie named The Situation, which was set in Iraq. Those different jobs in finance, government policy, and film gave him plenty of real life material to use in his writing. He took those experiences and shaped them into clear, well researched books that people all over the world still like to read.
Writing Career
Liaquat Ahamed has written multiple nonfiction books. His first major work, Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World, came out in 2009 through Penguin Books (USA) Inc. That book won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for History along with several other awards and best of the year honors.
He has continued to write and publish since then. Each new book shows his same deep research and clear storytelling style. Ahamed remains an active writer, so more books are expected in the future.
Lords of Finance
Liaquat Ahamed wrote the economic history book “Lords of Finance.” The Penguin Press published this work on January 22, 2009.
Many people think the Great Depression of 1929 happened because many different events came together by chance. Liaquat Ahamed argues instead that a small group of central bankers caused the economic crash. Their choices led to effects that helped bring about World War II and lasted for many years. The book offers a fresh look at how financial crises work on a global scale.
Many readers found this book clear and well researched. It turns a complex economic story into something easy to follow. The writing stays interesting from start to finish. Anyone new to the topic will likely enjoy learning from it.
1873
Liaquat Ahamed is the author of the nonfiction history book “1873.” The Penguin Press published this title on June 2, 2026.
During the 1850s and 1860s, a global economic boom took hold, fueled by heavy borrowing through worldwide bond markets. At the center of this system stood the Rothschild family, who had offices across Europe and an agent in New York. When multiple financial bubbles burst in the early 1870s, governments made poor choices that deepened the crisis and led to twenty years of falling prices. Ahamed shows how the crash of 1873 hurt American Reconstruction, weakened the Ottoman Empire, and sparked antisemitic backlash against the Rothschilds.
Readers worldwide have found this book both clear and eye opening. It takes a complicated financial crash and makes it easy to understand. The writing stays engaging without being overblown or dramatic. Anyone new to the topic would likely enjoy learning from it.
Money and Tough Love
The nonfiction politics and economics book “Money and Tough Love” is part of the Writers in Residence series. Liaquat Ahamed wrote the text, and Eli Reed contributed the photographs. Visual Editions published this work on August 12, 2014.
Here Ahamed provides a sharp look inside the International Monetary Fund. He blends facts with personal stories while traveling to Washington, Tokyo, and Dublin. He talks about the economy with Irish cab drivers and discusses Dior with Christine Lagarde.
