B.A. Paris is an author of suspense novels. She grew up in England but has moved to and spent most of her grown life in France. In the past, she was worked in finance and also as a teacher. She has five daughters. She has written two books, Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown, both of which have been published by St. Martin’s Press. She is a New York Times and USA Today best selling author for her novel Behind Closed Doors.

Books & Characters

Her first novel is called Behind Closed Doors and was released in 2016. The second book is called The Breakdown and was released in 2017. Her third book in the series will be coming out in 2018.

Behind Closed Doors was her first novel and it was a best seller. This suspenseful thriller focuses on the seemingly idyllic marriage between a couple. However, things might be a lot darker than they appear to be on the surface. Paris says the inspiration for Behind Closed Doors came from her suspicions about a friend’s marriage. She says that her imagination “went into overspin” and the book Behind Closed Doors was the creative result.

In Behind Closed Doors, Grace and Jack are a couple that graces luncheons and seem very polished. Grace is likable. She has a little sister named Millie with Down’s Syndrome that she adores. She takes care of Millie so her parents won’t have to do it as they are older. She meets Jack, a lawyer, by accident one day at the park. He seems like a great guy– good looking, charming, and gallant.

Grace always is a wonderful hostess for the dinner parties she and Jack throw, but she harbors a dark secret– knowing that her husband is a sadistic person, albeit one with great manners. As their marriage goes on and Grace falls deeper into despair, what will she do about her marriage? Is she trapped, or will she be able to break free?

The main character in The Breakdown is Cass Anderson. She’s spooked by something she saw driving in the woods while going home– and now that woman is dead and she can’t get it out of her mind. Now things are getting weird, and she’s not sure who it is that is calling her at night. Is it the ghost of the woman who died– or someone else entirely?

Behind Closed Doors (2016)

This psychological thriller put B.A. Paris on the map. Paris’s first novel goes into the world of a seemingly perfect marriage. Jack and Grace are a couple that appears to have the perfect marriage. It seems that they just go perfectly together. He is good looking and has wealth, and Grace is beautiful, charming, and graceful. Together, they are a handsome and likable pair. People find them admiring them in spite of themselves.

Perhaps people would like to get to know Grace better, but it would be tough to get to know her one on one. The reason for this is that she is never seen without her husband Jack. Wherever Grace Angel is seen, Jack is always there. At first glance, an impartial outsider might take this pairing and constant closeness for true love. They host extravagant dinner parties with delicious food prepared by Grace, and she makes sure to be the perfect hostess and ask the guests all the right questions.

However, others who have tried to go deeper wonder why it is that Grace does not answer the phone if they call, or how she is never available for social outings (or never appears to take them), even though Jack has money and she does not leave the house to work. She does not actually appear anywhere without her husband if anyone actually sits down to think about it.

That’s not the only strange thing about Jack and Grace’s marriage. She is very slim and yet apparently cooks up elaborate, long course meals. Then there is the matter of the bars installed on one of the bedroom windows. So when it comes down to the real state of their marriage, does Grace have a nervous condition? Why is she never seen out on her own? Why does she not appear to do much other than making the occasional social appearance with her husband? Or is it Jack that is controlling every aspect of her life?

To make matters more interesting, Jack is a lawyer that wins cases for battered women and constantly proclaims his contempt for men who are violent with women. In the past, Grace met Jack at a park with her sister Millie, who has Down’s Syndrome. Jack came to their rescue, people clapped, and Grace and Jack began dating. The book shows glimpses of the past but mainly covers Grace’s experience in the present, after becoming married to Jack.

Sometimes still surfaces can hide turbulent waters, and that handsome and charming man that you marry can turn out to be a monster. This novel races forward at a breakneck speed, combining action with the reader’s knowledge of what is going on behind closed doors. Told from the point of view of Grace, readers will not be able to get enough of this terror-filled thriller.

The Breakdown (2017)

The Breakdown is the second book from B.A. Paris. It starts out with a woman named Cass Anderson who is trying to come to terms with something she saw in a rural road in the middle of a storm. That’s when she first saw the woman sitting in a car in the woods– the same woman who was killed. She can’t tell her husband Matthew about it, because he would be mad that she took the shortcut home even though she promised not to. She might even have been hurt if she had stopped.

The only thing is, ever since then she can’t seem to remember much. She can’t recall her alarm code, where she parked, or why she’s ordering a baby stroller when she doesn’t have a baby. Yet it’s the woman she can’t forget. That and the guilt of it all. She keeps wondering whether she should have stopped. But then she has enough to deal with. Like the calls she’s getting with no one else on the end of the line. Or that weird feeling she can’t shake like someone’s watching her. This suspenseful second novel from B.A. Paris is not to be missed.
