Of Hoaxes and Homicide is the second book in the Dear Miss Hermione series by Anastasia Hastings. If you liked the first book in this series, keep things going and follow along with the adventure by checking out this sequel.
When you represent the best-loved Agony Aunt in London, dealing with questions from irate housekeepers and mothers with broken hearts is just part of the job.
Violet Manville has always been known for being sensible, while her half-sister Sephora is known for her ladylike manners. The two of them are very bored and even though neither of them would ever go so far as to say it out loud, they are both finding that they miss the thrill that comes with getting out there and doing detective work.
When Violet gets a letter from a mother with a broken heart sent to her alter-ego Miss Hermione, she finds that her heart rate goes up. The daughter the mother is referring to has become involved in a cult that is known as the Hermetic Order of the Children of Aed.
There are rumors of what goes on with this cult, from mystical doings to human sacrifices and the ghost in the Alburn Abbey where the Children pray. These rumors have taken the mind of the public by storm, being helped by a series of books about this group that were written by ‘Count Orlando’. Apparently this young girl has fallen prey to this cult, and Miss Hermione decides to look into it.
Her investigation comes up against real life when Violet finds out that the daughter who has run away is actually Margaret, who is her sister Sephora’s closest friend. Violet decides to go to the Children’s compound in Nottintham so that she can try to find her and persuade her to go back to London.
With Eli Marsh going around and a member of the Children being discovered dead having been poisoned to death, Violet and Sephora are finding that they have more on their plates than they might be able to manage. Can they come out on top in this case or are they in way too deep? Find out by reading this mystery from Anastasia Hastings!
