Early and Personal Life

Crystal Hana Kim grew up in Queens, New York, where she was born in 1987. Her parents had immigrated from South Korea, and she spent many summer breaks there visiting family. These early experiences moving between two different worlds shaped her view of the world from a young age.

She developed a close bond with her grandmother, who helped raise her when she was small. Her grandmother shared stories about her own life, including her time as a young refugee during the Korean War. Here the story opens in 2011 when a woman named Eunju Oh receives an unexpected visitor at her door. The visitor carries a knife that Eunju recognizes, one she has not seen for over thirty years. The story then moves back to 1980s South Korea, where a younger Eunju and her mother are sent to a reformatory center after being found homeless. Inside, Eunju and her mother form bonds with other women while two teenage brothers face their own struggles, and all of them make choices that follow them for the rest of their lives.

Many have found this story gripping from the very first chapter. The way the past and present connect keeps you turning pages well into the night. You become deeply invested in what happens to Eunju and the others. It is a powerful and moving reading experience.
