This is a book that Oprah Daily says is ‘every bit as addictive as your favorite guilty pleasure binge-watch, but also has ‘all the substance of a literary classic’. The New York Times Book Review also praised it, saying it is not only ‘smart’ and ‘provocative’ but ‘so damn addictive’. It was named one of the books of the summer by everywhere from Time to Vulture to The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Good Housekeeping, Betches, Publishers Weekly and Forbes.
There’s nothing to lose here, everything to gain, and the winner may end up taking it all. Lily is a gorgeous young lady in her twenties who is frequently bored. But that all changes when she wakes up and finds herself on a remote desert compound.
There along with her are nineteen other people, or in this case contestants, all part of a reality television show known for its popularity. In order to win, she is going to have to last longer than her housemates while at the same time competing in challenges to win luxurious rewards, including lipstick and champagne, as well as necessities for their home, like appliances, food, and a front door.
Even though the cameras follow her every move and are catching all of her angles (the good and the bad), Lily doesn’t want to leave at all. She has no desire to when the world outside seems to be falling apart. Here is as good a place as any to set up shop.
The competition keeps getting tougher and as it does, the intimacy that is between the players only gets deeper. Soon it is getting tough to figure out the line between desperation and desire. Then the producers make the stakes even higher, which puts the contestants into situations that can be dangerous or upsetting.
For Lily, the line that exists between surviving the game and playing it starts to blur. She knows that if she is able to make it to the end, she’ll end up getting some prizes that could make it all worth it. But she also doesn’t know if she has what it takes to win at the end of the day, either. Will she be able to make it through?
The Compound is a fascinating debut from a fresh new voice in the literary world that will keep readers engaged and thinking about the story long after finishing the final page! Check it out yourself to see what you think.
