Alastair Gunn is a published American author. He is a polymath, an artist, an astrophysicist, a fiction author, a science columnist, an expounder, an artist, as astrophysicist, and someone who facilitates all things scientific and creative.

Based in the U.K., Alastair is known for being the editor of the anthology series, The Wimbourne Book of Victorian Ghost Stories. Readers can also sign up for updates about this series through his site.

He writes a column for the BBC Focus magazine, has written for The Independent, The Daily Telegraphy, The Guardian, and more. He has contributed to different astronomy magazines such as Astronomy Now and BBC Sky at Night Magazine. The fiction he has written includes his Ballymoon collection of supernatural stories and The Bergamese Sect, his debut novel. He is also the creator and the author of the DCI Antonia Hawkins series, a collection of thrillers.

Alastair is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He is an active scientist as well as a popular public lecturer on astronomy. He is known for his challenging but accessible visually stunning lectures. He has also appeared on many different radio shows and television shows all around the world while also hosting an astronomy program on the radio.

Alastair says that he has always enjoyed telling stories. He spent hours while he was at school coming up with his own magazines and comics. He says that it is perhaps no surprise after all then that he ended up being a writer, beginning his career in motor journalism. Regular readers of car magazines may remember his efforts.

The time that he spent in journalism wasn’t dull but came to a quick end when his resident magazine ended up closing down. He could now either go after a shrinking industry or give into his urge to do something with more creative freedom and write a book.

The author made the decision in 2005 at a friend’s wedding. The seven years that came after that were all about researching, writing, submitting different drafts to dozens of literary agencies, getting feedback, and refining work, submitting again and ending up with something that got the interest of his agent. From there, Gunn reports that things ended up moving pretty quickly.

Gunn says that he reads as much as he can in as many different genres as is possible. He says that he rarely fails to complete a book, even if he is not enjoying it. He also believes that a writer is able to learn as much about what not to do from a bad book as they can from a good one about what works.

He recounts that he still recalls the lessons that he was able to learn from reading books such as Child 44, the Last Legionary series, or the science fiction anthology by Steven Baxter. He says that he loves Formula One and qualifies as a true petrol head thanks to the fact that he is on his third Alfa Romeo.

He says that his ultimate aim when he writes is to come up with something exciting and accessible, no matter what the subject matter is. If the story is good enough on its own, it probably should not matter whether you are interested in a specific genre or how familiar you are with the book’s setting and its time and place. In the end, Gunn thinks that it all returns back to humanity and that is what he likes exploring.

Alastair lives in Hertfordshire with Anna, his fiancée. Readers can keep up with things by liking his Facebook author page or by following him on Twitter.
