Good News is a 2026 novel by Alexa Yasemin Brahme. In this novel, a young artist does her best to try and find her way in the busy world of New York City. All along, she tries to navigate relationships that have been strained, an ex showing up again, and a growing sense of self. What of course happens after is a mess. A unique and original book that is a lot of fun that readers won’t want to miss out on!

Main character Maggie is close to the edge. Things are just not going the way that she would expect them to and things keep popping up. She thought that her MFA thesis (a canvas of twenty women caught between life and death) was interesting, but she finds that it is met with confusion, which sense her into an obsessive spiral about work.

Maggie is also aware that her Turkish mother is constantly calling her but is choosing to ignore the calls for now, which is only making her mother more frantic. She’s also drifting apart from her boyfriend Rob. She thought that he was marriage material but lately he is spending just about every minute that he can at the office and is also doing a lot of late nights, which seems suspicious to her and she’s not sure how to handle things going forward.

Making things even worse is the fact that her doctor brother John who is perfect in every way is currently dating Maggie’s rival in the art world. The performance artist is doing annoyingly well and seems to be headed for fame, even after a curious decision to renounce her name so that she can just go by the moniker ‘The Artist’.

When Maggie’s ex shows up again, it’s like the straw that broke the camel’s back. She has been maintaining her composure with great effort this whole time but once her ex appears on the scene, it suddenly all becomes too much to take.

Rakib is an art critic who has always talked smoothly and is full of charm and power. But he also has always looked at her in a way that has confused her. When whispers start to fly around that her painting might be up for a grant, she’s thrilled. This is the type of momentum that could really launch her career. Throughout all of this chaos, Maggie might actually see a silver lining.

Deadlines are coming up, her relationship with her boyfriend is doing worse than ever, and the sense of self she possesses is in flux. Now Maggie is starting to question not only her art but the entirety of the life that she has been working so hard to build and that she thought that she wanted. It appears that everything that was set in place before now seems ephemeral and she’s forced to examine who she is and what she really wants.

Placed against the pull and push of immigrant family expectations, in the world of contemporary art, and in the world of one’s late twenties where everything is uncertain, this book is witty and emotionally resonant and brings all of the drama and more that Maggie’s life contains to the reader in a way that they won’t forget. Can Maggie rise above and will things smooth out for her eventually?

Read Good News by Alexa Yasemin Brahme to find out, a great read especially if you are a fan of authors like Coco Mellors, Sarah Thankham Matthews, and Lily King.
