Emma of 83rd Street is the first book in the For the Love of Austen series by Audrey Belleza and Emily Harding. This is a novel that is romantic, engaging, fun, and witty! It combines the character of Emma from Jane Austen combined with all of the misadventure to be found in the dating scene of modern day Manhattan. Two friends who have been friends for life find out that when it comes to the search for love, you often do not have to search any further than in your own backyard.
Emma Woodhouse is a woman who has what so many would kill for. She is rich, beautiful, and clever. For twenty-three years she has lived in her close knit neighborhood in the Upper East Side, rarely having anything that upsets her or puts her into distress. That all changes when her starter hobby in matchmaking ends up leading to the marriage of her sister and then moving downtown.
Now Emma’s sister has gone and her friends are all plenty busy traveling abroad. Emma is going to have to begin her last year of grad school having to deal with boredom, which is a completely new emotion for her. When she makes the acquaintance of Nadine, an innocent transplant from Ohio with wide eyes, a sweet heart, and blonde highlights straight from the drugstore, Emma is thrilled. She could not only be a possible new friend but a new project as well.
The only issue is George Knightley, her overbearing neighbor who is in her way. George is a smart guy who is handsome and successful. The only thing that is able to give him more frustration than a corked whiskey is Emma. They’ve been friends ever since they were children, and now they’re all grown up. He doesn’t approve of the shopping sprees that she goes on between her various classes and doesn’t approve of the constant hobbies that she is taking on.
George is happy to constantly lecture her on being an adult and on all of the things that she is doing her best to ignore. Despite all of his complaints and to his chagrin, he is starting to notice that she’s not the young friend that he once knew from next door. She’s a fully grown woman and he just cannot get her out of his mind.
When Emma’s carefully laid out plans end up coming into contact with all types of people from hipster baristas to different family members who meddle to playboy millionaires who completely flake, the two friends start to realize that they may have only cared about being right, but now they have a new need. It is not too long before they find out that when it comes to even the most familiar stories, they can still tote along some additional surprises. What will happen? Read this book to find out!
Elizabeth of East Hampton is the second book in the For the Love of Austen series by Audrey Belleza and Emily Harding. This is a fun and engaging modern retelling of the famous Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen that so many people know and love. The best part is that even if you haven’t read the classic in a while (or ever), you can still follow along and appreciate the story.
This time the authors begin in the Hamptons in the summer. Here different classes end up going against each other, there are different rumors that are going around, and sometimes love has a habit of appearing when it is least expected.
After spending twenty-five years here, there is nothing that Lizzy would like more than to leave. Many people enjoy the Hamptons, and sometimes there is nothing better than spending the summer there. Elizabeth Bennet thinks that when it comes to summer, there could be no possible thing that is worse. She would know about it because she had lived out there for the entirety of her life. She partially feels this way because every June she has to watch her hometown on Long Island’s edge get filled up with wealthy Manhattan transplants who only have the desire to party until the sun comes up and then get gone by September.
When Lizzy decides to put her own personal dreams to the side so that she can help her family to rescue their failing bakery, she has not much to do but to surf and reflect. Every morning she goes to the beach to surf and wait for something to change. She’s not going to be holding her breath in this process, though. When her sister decides that it is time to begin flirting big time with Charlie Pierce, the hot new bachelor in town, he ends up unexpectedly linking Lizzy to a new guy by introducing her to him.
When it comes to Will Darcy and Lizzy Bennet, it seems like the two of them could not be more opposite. He is arrogant, aloof, and also completely rich. Even more irritating is the fact that he has never been particularly passionate about money. It’s the top thing on the long list of things that bother him. He’s also a little bothered by the fact that his friend Charlie wanted to set him up with the sister of his new girlfriend. In theory it could have worked, but seeing her in person was completely different.
Once he interacts with her a little and gets the measure of her, Will is convinced that Lizzy is completely wrong for him. There are just so many things about her that just do not gel with his own situation. Her family appears to be all after money and she also has the ability to speak to him quite bluntly. All that being said, he cannot get her out of his mind.
For her part, Lizzy doesn’t know how to take Will. Does he hate everyone? The two put their differences aside, but when Charlie and Annabelle’s little romance is threatened and more goes on, Will and Lizzy may have to to sacrifice their own happiness in order to protect those they love. Will they fall for each other anyway? Read this book to find out!
