This is Carrie’s debut collection of stories. They are set all across the American South and they feature a variety of characters who even though they are different all have something in common. They are all struggling to try and find belonging and love in the wake of histories that contain plenty of pain. Is it possible to be able to love where you came from despite the fact that the home often may not love you back?

These are eleven stories that cover all types of places from the North Carolina mountains to the Florida marshes to the Southern metropolitan cities. This collection follows along with different Black men and women who are all dealing with the different homes that have managed to elude them.

There is a pre-teen who is pregnant alongside her mother is not going to let convention dictate who she is naming as the father of her child. Then centuries following slavery separating his ancestors, a native Texan attempts to try and win over the love of his life, even though he is contending with a pretty strong family curse.

Then there’s a young deaconess who is falling for a new member of the church who is also wondering what it might mean if God stops speaking to her. At the end of the South, two sisters are making plans to try and escape North to find their freedom to a climate that could be potentially more stable and a better foundation.

Drawn out in such a way that readers will feel the setting and the emotions of the characters that they are reading about, Carrie R. Moore has been able to artfully steep the audience in place and history even as these stories evoke and explore different themes such as inheritance, belonging, and deep intimacy.

This debut is a collection of wonderful stories that is a showcase of one of the brightest voices to come along in modern fiction that wants readers to see how the past is able to shape the present and how choices made in the moment end up going on for years to come in the future.
