American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History is a 2012 book by Chris Kyle. If you appreciate a good nonfiction book and want to find out more about this individual, then this is a great book to check out by Kyle, who has unfortunately passed away. He may be gone, but this book in his own words remains and carries on his legacy.

For ten years starting in 1999, Chris Kyle became famous in an unusual way. Belonging to the Navy SEALs, he recorded the most career sniper kills in the history of the United States military. The Pentagon has been able to confirm over 150 of his kills, with the previous record for American military kills being 109. It has declined to verify the total number for this book.

Iraqi insurgents were so scared of Kyle that they gave him the nickname of al-Shaitan, which roughly translates to ‘the devil’. They also ended up putting a bounty on his head. Kyle would get legendary status among his fellow service members, thanks to his ability to protect them with incredible accuracy, all from stealth or rooftop positions. All of this makes for an extraordinary story and Kyle is providing an account of his experiences on the battlefield which makes this one of the most interesting, unique and great war memoirs to be written.

Kyle was a native of Texas who first learned to shoot by going on childhood hunting trips with his father. Kyle was a saddle-bronco rider and a champion at it before he joined the Navy. Once 9/11 happened, Chris Kyle became part of the front lines fighting the war on terror, and found his footing working as a world class sniper who did his best work while he was under fire.

Kyle was able to take down a 2,100-yard kill shot outside of Baghdad. Meanwhile in Fallujah, Kyle took on heavy fire so that he could save a group of Marines who were trapped on a street. He also tells of how in Ramadi, he faced down insurgents with the help of his pistol in close combat. Kyle is able to speak honestly about war, about the pain of it, and how he was shot twice, as well as going through the horrible experience of experiencing the deaths of two friends in combat.

This book not only retells his story but also honors the warriors that Kyle served with on and off the battlefield. There are also first person accounts sprinkled throughout the book that featured Taya, Kyle’s wife, who speaks about the toll that war took on their marriage and also her husband and their children.

Charged with adrenaline and personal in every way, full of details, this is a first hand account of war as only Chris Kyle could have told it. Grab a copy to find out all of it and see what you think!

Kyle selected ten guns that he could use to assist in telling his story. This includes the American long rifle, the Winchester rifle, the Colt .45 revolver, the .38 police handgun, and the m-16 rifle platform that he himself was able to use as a SEAL.
