Eric Carle
Eric Carle is a children’s book writer and illustrator best known for his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Translated to over 30 languages, this book pushed Carle into the limelight and set the pace for his writing career. Since 1969, Carle has written over seventy children’s books, most of them best-sellers. Most of his books puts all kids in mind. Children as young as two, even the visually impaired children, can enjoy some of Carle’s best works.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, as the name suggests, tells the classic story told for generations. One lovely Sunday, a tiny egg hatched into a caterpillar. The caterpillar was very hungry, so come Monday, he ate through an apple. Tuesday, he changed his diet and ate three plums, but he was still hungry. When he finally ate to his fill, the caterpillar went into a deep sleep after building a cocoon around himself. A few weeks later, the caterpillar woke up only to discover that he had transformed into a beautiful butterfly.
It is incredible how the author has dramatized one of nature’s loveliest marvels. The metamorphosis of a butterfly is something children find intriguing, and the author writes and illustrates the process in such a captivating way. Each step is illustrated in a way child with different learning abilities will understand. For most children, the lessons in this book stick in their minds for years.
There is a lot that kids can learn from this story. First is the need to do things in moderation. Even though the caterpillar is mostly hungry, he doesn’t eat everything up. All he does is dig a single hole in each fruit, leaving more than enough for the rest. The kids also learn the importance of trying new things. The caterpillar is not picky when it comes to his diet, and he enjoys eating everything from an apple to a piece of watermelon. Through the caterpillar, young children can learn how fun it is to sometimes step out of their comfort zone.
The message that change is good cannot be ignored. Just like the caterpillar, any child who reads this story can straighten up, spread their wings, and fly. The book also provides an opportunity to teach the young ones about healthy foods and the importance of eating everything in moderation. Kids as young as two years can read and enjoy this book. The colorful illustrations may also attract a curious younger reader than this. It is fantastic that adults also find the story intriguing, possibly because of the nostalgia and whatever the book meant to them in their childhood.
First published in 1969, The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold millions of copies across the world. The book tells a touching story of the hardship a caterpillar experiences in his young life. Thanks to his constant hunger, the caterpillar will eat a little too much only to end up with a stomach upset. However, once he overcomes his ravenous appetite, the caterpillar is able to progress on his journey to becoming a butterfly. The book is filled with colorful diagrams, and the narrative is easy enough for the young ones. This book is ideal if you are looking for something that your child will enjoy reading for many years to come.
The Very Busy Spider
The Very Busy Spider tells the story of a spider who wakes up one morning to start spinning her web. Given that the web is on a fence post, the spider is never alone. The animals in the neighboring farm try all they can to distract her, but the little spider remains focused on her work. Despite all the mooing, neighing, and baaing going on, the spider doesn’t take a moment from her work. Once she is finished, the spider shows the animals her beautiful web while demonstrating its usefulness. Now trapping flies is made easy, and this promotes a good community for everyone.
This is a multi-sensory book where the young readers can see and feel the pictures included. All pictures are filled with bright and happy colors that are sure to brighten your child’s day. The text is rhythmic, so many kids enjoy hearing it as well. It is nice meeting all the animals and seeing how they interact with the spider who seemed rude in the beginning. From the napping cat and rock-jumping goat to the mud-rolling pig, it is fun following them all as they go about their business. Children get to learn the behavior of most domestic animals while understanding the reason why spiders build webs.
One striking thing about this book is that kids can follow all the action without any challenges. Whether sighted or blind, it is easy for young ones to understand whatever is happening on every page. Kids can trace the embossed spider thread and play an active role in telling this intriguing story. This, in turn, helps capture their attention and keep them engaged to the end. For older kids, this book may be an excellent way to start teaching the importance of focus. As long as they focus and keep their eye off the prize, nothing in life is unachievable. Just like the busy spiders, children who stay focused on their goals get rewarded in the end.
The Very Busy Spider is an excellent read for children two years and up. Using the book, children can learn about different animals and the sound they make. The contrast between the farm animals who want to play and the busy spider is lovely, and the results are evident at the end of the day. Thanks to the web, the fly who spent the day disturbing all the other animals is captured. Everything from the texture to the narration in this book is perfect. Your child will enjoy reading the book on themselves, feeling the textures, and seeing all the beautiful colors. It is also a remarkable story to read as well as a family. Since the book is compact, it is a perfect bring along whenever you want to keep the children occupied outside the house.
