Warren Ziller decided to pack up and move his family to southern California looking for a charmed life. To all appearances, he discovered a gated community that was located not far from the beach that was a haven among the affluent splendor of the eighties.
He has his own vision for living the American dream, but he has no idea that his pursuit of the dream is going to be interrupted. Warren has lost all of their savings on a bad investment in real estate. He hides the truth of the matter from his wife Camille, who notices his change of demeanor but mistakenly interprets it as a sign that he is having an affair.
Meanwhile, their children have become distant. Dustin, Lyle and Jonas are all too preoccupied with their own rebellions and betrayals, too involved in their own lives to pay much attention or notice the distress that their parents are going through.
When tragedy hits, the Zillers have no other choice but to relocate to the abandoned housing development located in the desert. In this new home, each member of the family will ultimately have to deal with what has brought them there, who is to blame, and whether they will be able to come up with the forgiveness that is necessary in order to keep the family together.
Full of insights into the way that modern life can be and with a focus on the everyday absurdities that life can bring, Eric brings a funny, heart-breaking, and original picture of an American family to life in this engaging first fictional novel.
