Freida McFadden is a name readers of modern thrillers see often. She is a best-selling American author who also works as a physician. Her medical specialty is treating people with traumatic brain injuries. This unique background gives her a factual understanding of the human mind, which she uses to inform her fiction.

Her books are known for being entertaining and hard to put down. She has a talent for creating characters that readers can connect with quickly. The protagonists in her stories are often ordinary people placed in intense situations. This makes their choices and the resulting tension feel immediate and personal for the audience.

She crafts narratives that keep the pages turning with steady momentum. The plots are structured to deliver surprises without feeling overly complicated. One of her most successful books is called The Housemaid. It became a hit and was turned into a movie released in 2025, proving the wide appeal of her storytelling approach.

Early and Personal Life

Freida McFadden grew up in midtown Manhattan with one sibling. Both of her parents worked in medicine. She wanted to be a physician from an early age and attended a competitive New York City high school that helped build her work ethic.

She studied math at Harvard before attending medical school. While training to be a doctor, she kept writing fiction and submitting manuscripts to publishers. After medical training, she began self-publishing, and her 2013 debut drew on her experiences as a medical intern.

She now lives outside Boston with her family and practices medicine part time. Her medical background allows her to write accurate scenes. New York City often appears as a setting in her novels, as growing up there continues to influence her work.

Writing Career

McFadden began her writing career in 2013, self-publishing The Devil Wears Scrubs and building a catalog of series and standalone thrillers. Her 2022 novel The Housemaid became an international bestseller and was adapted into a 2025 film that grossed $300 million worldwide. She would quickly follow this success up with a further two sequels in that series.

She continues to publish several books each year, with other popular titles including The Inmate, Never Lie, and Ward D. Her work earned a 2023 International Thriller Writers Award for The Housemaid. That same year, The Housemaid’s Secret won a Goodreads Choice Award.

    Frieda,
Attended your virtual talk on June 13 2024.
Learned many interesting things about your writing. Your books
are impossible to put down once they are started.

Just finished your new one The Housemaid is Watching. I read it in 2
Days. If I didn’t have to sleep it would have been 1 day. I have read 4 of your books and pledge this will be the summer of Frieda McFadden where I
Get to read them all.Your books are fabulous and I hope you have already
    Started the next one!

I should have never picked up the first book, Housemaid. I skipped all my errands and chores to read this book from the start to the finish. Kept me on the edge of my seat. With most books you can sort of figure out the ending. Not with this one. So many twists and turns. What a great book. I am reading CoWorker now and have ordered 3 more books by this same author.

I love your books so much! I read Brain Dead! That was so great! I laughed so much! I realize some people may think I have a sick sense of humor (maybe I do)! I was so amazed about how spot on you are. I have had friends that have had Brain Damage from various accidents, some mild and some not so mild, but understanding and humor have got us through it!

I just finished Housemaid AND Housemaid’s Secret! Oh my goodness! Both are fantastic. So easy to read and you just cannot put them down once you start. Bought The Coworker and cannot wait to start reading it.

I read the Housemaid and it was one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time. I had to order the Housemaid’s Secret and am waiting on that one. In the meantime, Walmart had the CoWorker.
Not as happy with the Coworker. No twists and thrills. I had figured out the ending before I was halfway through the book.
It was a good read but nowhere near the thrill of
      Housemaid.
I would give Housemaid an 8 (can’t give it a 10 as it is the first book by McFadden I have read). But Coworker would rate a 2-3.

My first book was Housemaid. I would rate it an 8 since it is my first book by McFadden. I just finished the Coworker today. I had figured out the ending before I was halfway through the book. It just didn’t have the same twists and thrills.
      I would give it a 2-3

I don’t want to give away spoilers – but what I hated about The Coworker was the twist was telegraphed way ahead of time (person knowing the address) and I thought it was a red herring but hope – that was actually the twist.

I “used to have” another favorite author UNTIL I read one of McFaddens books! I have read almost all of them & seriously don’t know what I am going to do now. No other author holds my attention like McFaddens. Although I would like her to write lengthier books o I don’t finish them in 1 day. Lol

I love your books but I do do get tired of how the men are so sexy and the sex is so great and all that. I just want to read a good mystery and don’t need all that “oh her husband is drop dead gorgeous, I hope he holds on to his towel” passages. Keep writing and it’s ok to have men who aren’t chiseled and women who aren’t longing for sex. haha

Then definitely do NOT read any of Hoober’s books! I read just one, and the story line was superb BUT the unnecessary cussing & sex is is beyond disgusting! That’s was it for me & Hoover! Thank God I discovered F. McFadden, her writing is like no one I’ve ever read & “normally” she doesn’t have the filth others tend to think we NEED to read for it to be a good book! News flash…we read to escape from the world we live in! We DON’T want to read cussing & sex!
