Gregg Dunnett is a published British author known for writing psychological thriller stories as well as stories that are about travel and adventure, frequently showcasing a connection to the oceans or the coast.
Before he turned to novels, Gregg was working as a journalist for a decade on a windsurfing magazine. He also owned a sailing school in Egypt for a time and has also taught English in various places around the world, such as Italy, Turkey, Portugal, and Thailand. He has taught sailing in Spain and Greece and has had various dull jobs along the way.
Gregg’s brother is Jono Dunnett, an adventurer. He windsurfed alone in 2015 while being unsupported and made his way around the whole of the coastline of Great Britain. He is currently busy windsurfing along the coastline or Europe.
Gregg resides on the south coast of England in Bournemouth along with Maria, his partner. The two share two younger children, named Alba and Rafa. His debut novel did very well, becoming an Amazon top 100 best seller in the United Kingdom. It was downloaded more than a quarter of a million times.
The author says that he has always wanted to do two things when it comes to life, write and have adventures. He imagined grand affairs when he was a kid, and it partly happened. He says that he was lucky to spend some time abroad teaching English and sailing, and got a great job testing windsurfing boards for a magazine that he grew up reading. He also made the bad decision of buying a windsurfing center located in Egypt. He’s done less exciting jobs as well, such as packing potatoes on a farm, working in local government, and working in a giant book warehouse.
He also did some writing along the way and he was able to write articles for Boards Magazine. His brother announced in 2015 that he would become the first person to windsurf alone around Great Britain on a proper adventure that was dangerous and exciting to Gregg. He was interviewed for television and the papers before he set off, with mixed opinions of the trip, with some finding him inspirational while others found him reckless, with lots of people expecting him to fail. However, he did not fail and made the trip successfully, and was the first to make the sailing solo crossing from Wales to Ireland without the help of a safety boat.
Gregg was inspired by the trip his brother took and it also prompted him to ‘pull his finger out’. He had been trying to write novels for a few years, finding it touch and go whether he was going to have a half-finished novel on a hard drive or might actually finish the job.
He finds real adventures a little more difficult to accomplish now that he has two children that are lovely but demanding too. He tries to get away when he is able to go on nights out in the wild rough camping, taking surf trips where he sleeps in the van, and being able to go windsurfing at the time of big storms. He loves going on adventures with the children as well. He says that he hopes to get around to real adventures like sailing across an ocean, biking a continent, and continuing to surf empty waves.
