JL Peridot is an Australian author of romantic science fiction and fantasy. She lives with her partner and a cat in Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia on Whadjuk-Noongar country. She is sometimes credited as J.L. Peridot in book catalogues and bylines. She stays in touch with her readers through Dot Club, her email newsletter available through jlperidot.com. Her emails usually talk about nerdy interests, sustainability, research she does for her books, and what’s happening in her corner of the world.
JL’s writing style is known for being sensual, emotional, and character-driven. She describes her writing process as a “hodge podge of chaos” (source: Dot Club), and practices Cal Newport‘s Deep Work principles and Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way in order to finish writing her books and stories. She says the “most stressful thing” about writing science fiction romance is thinking about futuristic cultures and societies (source: JL’s blog).
JL Peridot is best known for her standalone novel, Yet We Sleep, We Dream, a romantic and steamy space-fantasy re-telling of William Shakespeare’s comedy play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The book has a futuristic setting with ties to near-future Australia, and features colloquial Australian English and several subplots involving a multicultural and multi-lifeform cast of characters. Against a hazy backdrop of climate change back on Earth, students and research supervisors aboard the starship Athenia orbit a lifeless planet during the university summer break, encountering ancient gods and otherworldly occurrences after planet dust contaminates the ship. Sensitivity reader Bill Bennell from Kooyar Wongi for assistance with the inclusion of Noongar elements and the Noongar Aboriginal perspective character, Nick Button (source: book acknowledgements). The novel came out in September 2023 and is available in both digital and paperback formats.
JL is also known for her steamy science fiction office romance novella, It Starts with a Kiss. The book is written in third-person past perspective, and centres on main characters Celeste Cho and Owen Larson, both engineers at a mail and cargo depot located at the edge of the solar system. Celeste is an under-appreciated worker who has a long-time crush on Owen, who was once a superstar engineer but allowed his skills to dull through becoming complacent in a mediocre job. This novella is described as being ideal for readers who enjoy “emotionally charged office romances with resilient characters” (source: StoryGraph). It was first published in 2019 by Kyanite Publishing, formerly an independent publisher of science fiction and fantasy. Kyanite Publishing closed its doors in 2020. This book was subsequently republished by Muscoca Media.
The Only Question That Matters is an erotic one-night stand novella, set on an interstellar cruise ship. It is the first book in the Celestial Dream series, and tells the story of Sofia, a thirty-something divorcée who recently left an emotionally savage marriage. She meets writer Alexei on the cruise and the pair form a mutual appreciation for each other, until on her final night aboard the ship, Sofia works up the courage to approach Alexei for a date. The book opens on her asking him to dinner. It was first published in 2018.
