Lauren Takes Leave is a 2012 book by Julie Gerstenblatt. If you have been looking for a creative new story to read and don’t know what to pick, give this book a try and see what you think!
Lauren Worthing is wearing a lot of hats. She is a mother, a wife, and a middle school teacher. She has a busy life and occasionally she needs some time off of from that. When a jury duty summons comes along, it seems like the ideal excuse in order to get a break from all of it. That includes her career, which is slightly unfulfilling, her children who are slightly spoiled, her husband who is lightly absent, and her criminal babysitter.
It just seems like the perfect time to take some time for herself. She takes along her friend Jodi and Kat to be with her and then takes leave of her senses, going on a pleasure bender that lasts for a week. Whether it’s in a cold exam room of a dermatologist’s office or it’s in the marble master bathroom of a mansion in the suburbs, Lauren takes on the deep questions that come along with being middle aged and living in the upper middle class.
These are questions such as who is she actually? Why didn’t any of her friends warn her that she shouldn’t dance in Louboutins? Before the week has closed out, Lauren have moved further from the stereotypes of chick lit along with her friends that they have become and more over to the side of being cheaters, liars, and stealing bad asses that they never knew that they would want to be. This is a story packed with humor of women who are on the verge and might just go over! Check this book out for yourself to find out what happens.

Placed against the Great Fire of 1846 in Nantucket, this emotional novel pulls together three brave women who are fighting to save all that they hold dear. Nantucket in 1846 is an island that is set apart from the rest by not just geography but its own unusual circumstances.
With the menfolk of the place away at sea for times that often go for years, the women who live here know an independence that is completely rare and are happy to take on the challenges that go along with it.
Eliza Macy is doing her best to try and cover up her financial trouble as she is waiting for her husband to come back from a voyage. The whaling captain should be returning, but in the meantime she is struggling. Desperate, she goes against her progressive ideals by targeting Meg Wright, a free black woman who is pregnant who is attempting to try and relocate her store to be on Main Street.
At the same time, Maria Mitchell is an astronomer who really enjoys running the Atheneum in Nantucket. She likes to spend her time during the night looking at the stars, but is worried about showing the secret wishes that live in her heart.
On a hot night in July, a huge fire ends up breaking out in town. It was made worse by the wooden buildings who were so densely packed together. With all that they have now threatened, these three women who are all very different have to look at their priorities and figure out what they are going to save, what they are going to let go of, and what type of life they can build again and make from the past’s ashes.
