The Gypsy Crown is the first book in The Chain of Charms series by Kate Forsyth. If you have been looking for something new and completely original to read, be sure to check this book out!

Main character Emilia Finch is a gypsy, as is her cousin Luka. For the pair, it means that their life is strong with traditions that have been passed down through the years. It is full of dance, music, story and magic, and they are governed by the laws of their clan as well as the ways of the road.

This is their way of life and they see nothing wrong with it. But then there is the Puritanical government of England in the 17th century, which is very repressive. In their eyes, the gypsies are not allies but a nuisance. They consider them to be thieving vagrants who tell fortunes who on top of this are likely friends of the devil.

The Finches have done their best to stay out of trouble. However, it ends up finding them when they choose to raise dowry money for one of the daughters of the clan. They do this by performing in Kingston square on a market day that is just not a good day to do so.

A sequence of bad events leads to the family being thrown in jail as they have been charged with murder. Out of all the members, it is just Emilia and Luka who are able to escape. They promise their family members that they will bring help back with them and help to free them.

The only issue with this plan is that they don’t exactly know how to do this. But Emilia has a deep belief in the legend of the charms. It is said that the luck of the Rom has been bad ever since a gypsy matriarch a long time ago broke her chain of charms by dividing them up and giving one each to each of her children, five in total. Ever since then, the gypsies have seen persecution and their families have been dispersed.

Emilia thinks that if they are able to get the charms back from the families, the magic of the Rom will be able to return and she can use it to get her family freedom. But her cousin Luka is thinking in a more practical manner and he just wants to get the other clans’ help in order to get the Finches out of jail.

Now it’s up to Emilia and Luka to do their best to bring their plan to fruition. They make a mad dash through the countryside, all while navigating the hornets’ nest of Puritans, Royalist spies, and traitors. Can them finish their mission before a magistrate hands down a horrible sentence for those that they care about? Read this book to find out!

The Silver Horse is the second book in The Chain of Charms series by Kate Forsyth. If you love a good adventure book and enjoyed the first book in this series, then keep the action going by checking out the sequel!

There is a legend that there once was a gypsy queen out there. She wore on her wrist a chain of lucky charms, six in total. They were a golden crown, a butterfly in amber, a silver horse, a cat’s eye shell, and a bolt of lightning from the heart of a falling star, and then the flower of the rue plant, also known as the herb of grace. She gave her children a charm as their talisman, but breaking the chain of charms also appeared to set off misfortune that has followed the gypsies ever since.

Now Emilia and Luka are in possession of the gypsy crown. They are traveling with their group looking for the Hearne Tribe. Their hope is that this family is going to help release their family from jail, especially since they are going to be related soon.

Luka and Emilia are able to track down the Hearnes while they are racing horses on the Downs above Epsom. Emilia is going to have to compete in the race to get their support. Does she have the strength to give up her mare to get the small silver horse, the charm owned by the Hearne family? Can they get out of Coldham again? Read this book to find out!
