But in the process of buying it and moving in, the online entrepreneur may end up taking on more than she ever bargained for and discovering that there is something else behind the peeling wallpaper in a gothic debut novel that is going to have readers flipping the pages excitedly to find out what happens next.
Main character Sarah Slade is doing her best to start over. She is the new owner of the Black Wood House, which is infamous for being the scene of a horrible murder-suicide crime. She has every intention of taking this fixer-upper and taking it over, doing her best to try and reach a new audience in the process on her lifestyle blog. If it distracts her from her marriage being in the gutter, so much the better.
As Sarah paints over the past of the house, she knows just as well as anyone would that just a new facade is not going to fix every secret and magically make it all go away. She starts getting suspicious when the builders start acting strangely and even going through weird accidents. Sarah understands that there is only a certain amount of time that she can keep sleeping in the bedroom with the bloodstains on the floor and deal with the strange footsteps that she hears above in the attic.
Then strange notes start showing up everywhere. Sarah starts to think that there is something or someone out there that wants to hurt her. It could be the neighbors, it could be her husband, and it could even be the house personally. But the more that she remodels and works on the house, known as Black Wood House, the more that the house seems to be angered by the intrusions.
As time goes on, her life only gets more out of control. On top of that, her own sense of reality seems to fluctuate as well. She has come up with lies to hide her personal secrets, but in the process of it all, she has to wonder whether it’s actually worth it.
