Marcela Fuentes is an American published author and essayist. She has won the Pushcart Prize.

Marcela attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and ended up being the 2016-2017 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing.

Her writing has been featured in such publications as the Indiana Review, Texas Highways Magazine, The Rumpus, Ploughshares, Kenyon Review, and other different journals.

Her first novel Malas came out in 2024 and was tied to a linked story collection called My Heart Has More Rooms Than a Whorehouse.

The author resides in Fort Worth, Texas.

Malas is the debut book from Marcela Fuentes. Published in 2024, the novel was a Good Morning America Book Club Pick. It also received many awards. It was a Bookpage Best Historical Fiction Book of 2024, a winner of the American Book Award 2025, a finalist for the Writers’ League of Texas 2024 Fiction Book Award, won the WILLA Award for Contemporary Fiction 2024, and was shortlisted for the 2025 Mark Twain Award.

The year is 1941 when an older woman ends up confronting Pilar Aguirre in La Cienega, Texas, a small border town. The woman believes that Pilar has stolen her husband. She has a heated outburst on the woman where she ends up cursing Pilar and her family.

Over forty years down the line, Lulu Muñoz is trying to get away from chaos everywhere she goes. Her father goes through moods, she’s evading his rules, she’s continuing her double life as the singer in a punk band. She’s also not looking forward to her quinceañera, which is coming up.

When her grandmother passes away, Lulu sees a stranger crash the funeral. She is drawn to this glamorous person, wondering more about this individual who lives on their own, shunned at the edge of town.

They end up having a kinship of sorts, but this friendship will also end up picking at the secrets of Lulu’s family’s past. Her birthday party day is coming up, and the reader sees the page move between now two strong female voices. A woman must do what she can to make peace with the past while the younger girl does what she can in order to embrace the future.

Full of cinematic details, taking the reader everywhere from the rodeo to a Selena concert to family gatherings with music and more, this debut in fiction is a wonderful love letter to not only the Tejano culture but its community, the same community that helps both of these women as they go on a journey to find out what family really means.
