Mark B. Gilgam is a published author known for his Wandering Blacksmith series and writing in the fantasy genre.
Hardening the Steel is the first book in the Wandering Blacksmith series by Mark B. Gilgam. If you love a good fantasy story and are always game to read something new, give this book a try and see what you think!
The Bloodswamp is a northern battlefield and in it the healer Aslaug ends up finding a baby, much to her surprise. The baby is lying there next to a warrior who is on their way out of this world. The healer has recently had the loss of her two baby sons, and so there is a space for this infant in her life. She chooses to keep it for her own, going against the judgment against his vanquished people.
Eckehart, a blacksmith, helps her to keep it a secret. They give the boy the name of Kitt and he ends up growing up on a remote island located on the gray northern sea. He is working pretty hard so that he can end up becoming a master blacksmith. He also fills his time by reading a lot of books, daydreaming about lands that lay far away and cities that glitter.
He feels that he knows all that there is to know about his parents, but he has no idea that there is a dark secret around his birth. He also is wondering what type of role the hero-king Grimwolf is claiming in all of this. At the same time, warriors from many different lands are gathering at Isenkiff, all in the hopes that they will be able to get some of Eckehart’s famous Aurora Steel. Along the way, they show Kitt how he can become a warrior.
Aslaug does not approve of war and combat and teaches him to heal wounds as well as how to keep a handle on his expanding strength so that he does not harm anyone. Despite all of this, she does not go out of her way to share what she knows about magic with him.
Kitt is dealing with sea rovers, ice giants, a thorn monster, the intimidating figure known as the Snow Queen, and on top of that the strange object known as a moonlight sword, which is wielded at him by a silver woman. He goes over the sea in a boat to try and get to the Dark Wood Murkowydir, the place where lost cities choose to sleep and creatures that are able to make it there that have been thought to have gone extinct in other places.
It is a place where the Woodstalkers hang out, a group of people who scare everyone thanks to their renown for being stealthy and cruel. The Knights of the Red Lily teach Kitt their code of honor to aid, protect and serve. Can Kitt become a warrior and will he be able to make it out of the Dark Wood? Read Hardening the Steel to find out!
Heavy Metals is the second book in the Wandering Blacksmith series by Mark B. Gilgam. Check out the second book in this fantasy series and keep the adventure going!
In three different stories that are all interconnected, Kitt is put into all manner of interesting and unique adventures. He’s going to have to take on all types of dangers that he never saw coming before and is dealing with a horrible dilemma that is making him deal with the limits of his resolve.
Inside of the Murkowydir woods, Kit finds himself dealing with the old remnants of ancient cities as well as copper and tin mines that have long since been abandoned. He also happens to save a man from a horrible fate, but is not aware that his good deed and selfless act is going to actually end up triggering a series of events unfolding like dominoes that may end up putting the Rilante realm into despair and war.
Prince Ardri is motivated by the dance of the Wandering Stars, while also finding himself tangled up in the intrigues of an ancient magical kingdom. He ends up tempting Kit with secrets of bronze, and the cost that is yet to be paid is very high and is way too much.
As chaos starts to descend, there is still the matter of who is going to be responsible for the consequences. Meanwhile, a huge black growth is taking over the center of the woods, with its tendrils moving through the dark rituals of malevolent creatures.
Kitt combines forces with the Feen Woodstalkers in an alliance that is fairly precarious and they set off on a dangerous mission to try and get rid of the black thorns before they are able to spread more and be inside of people’s homes. Coming back to Isenkliff, Kitt discovers that his family is not there. He also ends up finding out the truth about his own birth. His life has completely been turned upside down and changed for good and so he leaves everything and goes out into the world. What will happen? Read this book to find out!
