American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century is a 2019 book by Maureen Callahan. It was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for Readers’ Favorite Nonfiction.
There are the names of many serial killers that everyone knows. Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy are serial killer names that have been heard in the news as well as public consciousness. Most people haven’t heard of Israel Keyes, a scary serial killer who was one of the most ambitious in modern history. The FBI thought his behavior to be ‘unprecedented’, and a prosecutor described him as being a ‘force of pure evil’.
Keyes operated as a predator who would strike all over the United States. He would bury his kill kits of weapons, cash and body disposal tools in different remote locations placed all over the country. Throughout fourteen years, he would fly to a city, rent a car, and then drive for miles so that he could use his kits. He would pick a stranger’s house, break in, abduct them during the day, and then kill them and then dispose of them in hours. Then he would go back to Alaska, going back to being a construction worker who took care of his daughter.
Maureen Callahan was a journalist. When she first heard about this killer in 2012, she was fascinated by how a killer this big could go undetected for over a decade. A project began that would take up her time over the next few years, getting to the bottom of the story of how the FBI caught Keyes and attempting to figure out what it means that a killer like this man could exist.
Here was a clever killer who may have been caught but also left his randomly committed crimes behind him, and to this day many of this go unsolved. This book is the culmination of many interviews that have taken place over the years with different people in law enforcement and the killer’s life, as well as various research that was uncovered from classified FBI files.
Whether you’re interested in serial killers, a lover of nonfiction, or just intrigued by this book, this is a great read that you won’t want to miss. Callahan leads the reader on a journey through the mind of a killer and a scary look at how traditional law enforcement can have its limitations. Give it a read, but beware reading too late at night if you are easily disrupted by scary things! As killers go, Keyes was scarier than most, which is saying something.
Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed is a 2024 book by Maureen Callahan. It was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in the category of Readers’ Favorite History & Biography in 2024. This is a unique character-driven deep dive into the real Kennedy Curse. You may have heard of it before. Whether it’s murder, misogyny or mayhem, many women have paid the price for the Camelot obsession.
For a long time, the Kennedys have been associated with power, wealth, glamour, and integrity. But behind the curtain and appearance of this all is a dark truth, which is a pattern of men in the Kennedy family abusing women and girls, both physically and psychologically.
Behind them they have left a trail full of death and ruin in the wake of each generation. Through the decades of scandal, from sexual assault to suicide and slander and manslaughter, the family as well as their defenders have been able to protect the family and keep the Kennedy brand intact.
In this book, journalist and author Callahan shows the hidden history in the family of violence and exploitation, showing their sexism and their depravity while also putting these girls and women at their place in the center of the story of the dynasty. There are many women’s names mentioned, from Martha Moxley to Marilyn Monroe to Jacqueline Onassis to Carolyn Bessette and more.
Pulling on years of explosive reporting and written electrically, this is a reckoning of this family and the part that they played in American history that is with us to this day. Callahan puts the spotlight on the women in the orbit of the Kennedys, giving due to those who could get free of them and those who could not. If you’re fascinated by this family like so many are and have been through the years, and intrigued by every detail to come out about them, this is the perfect book for you.
