Robert Thorogood is a screenwriter and author that is best known for creating “Death in Paradise”, a murder mystery series airing on BBC 1.
Robert was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland and he read History at Downing College, Cambridge. While he was at Cambridge, he toured with Footlights, the university’s student comedy troupe, in 1993 and was elected President in 1994.
Shortly after leaving Cambridge, he set up a theater company which toured small schools and theaters. The highlight of which was a production of Moliere’s The Miser, which he directed and acted in along with David Mitchell, Robert Webb, and Olivia Colman.
Robert wrote for a number of years, offering his scripts to ITV, the BBC, and independent film companies, however before 2011 the one script of his which was actually produced was “From Abstraction”, a Radio 4 afternoon drama play about Paul Wolfskehl (a mathematician).
He entered the inaugural Red Planet Prize in 2008, and was selected as a finalist, where he was able to pitch his “Copper in the Caribbean” idea to Tony Jordan. The show was broadcast finally in 2011. Robert went on to write 5 episodes of series 1 of “Death in Paradise”, along with 2 of its 2nd series, then 3 in the 3rd series, two of the 6th, as well as 1 each of the others, except for its 10th.
He adapted his “The Marlow Murder Club” series into a TV series for UKTV and PBS. It starred Samantha Bond as Judith Potts and Jo Martin as Suzie Harris and Cara Horgan as Becks Starling.
Robert won France Film’s “En Route to France” award in 2012.
“A Meditation on Murder” is the first novel in the “Death in Paradise” series and was released in 2015. Robert brings these characters to life on the page. A murder victim, five suspects, and a room that nobody entered or left; a classic murder in a locked room conundrum.
Aslan Kennedy leads an idyllic life: leader of this spiritual retreat for wealthy holidaymakers on one of the most unspoilt islands in the Caribbean, Saint Marie. Until he gets murdered, of course. This case appears to be open and shut: Aslan was murdered while inside a locked room with just five other people, one of whom has already confessed to this murder.
Detective Inspector Richard Poole, is hot and bothered, not to mention fed up with talking to witnesses who would rather discuss his ‘aura’ than their whereabouts when the murder happened. However he also knows that the facts of the case aren’t quite stacking up. Matter of fact, he is convinced that the person that has just confessed to this murder is the one person that could not have done it. DI Poole is determined to track the real killer down, and he’s quickly on the trail, and no stone is going to be left unturned.
“The Killing of Polly Carter” is the second novel in the “Death in Paradise” series and was released in 2015. Polly Carter was a supermodel that was famed for her party-girl lifestyle and looks. Now she is dead, having apparently thrown herself from the clifftop close to her home on the island of Saint Marie. Those that knew her say she never would’ve killed herself, and when DI Richard Poole gets called in to investigate further, he is inclined to agree that there is more to her death than meets the eye.
Richard is already fighting a losing battle against the intense summer heat of the Caribbean, and now faces some fresh adversaries: a host of conflicting motives; a stream of alibis; and, worst of all, his mom visiting. A frenzy which would surely let a murderer slip away unnoticed, but Richard is sure that the guilty party still is on the island.
While his team is closing in on Polly’s household, DI Poole is convinced that the model’s death was an inside job. And he is determined to prove who had planned this killing and why.
“The Marlow Murder Club” is the first novel in the “Marlow Murder Club” series and was released in 2021. In order to solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero.
Judith Potts (age 77) is blissfully happy. She lives alone in a faded mansion in Marlow, sets crosswords for The Times, and there is not a man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink.
She witnesses a brutal murder while she is out swimming in the Thames one evening. When the local cops do not believe her story, she and two unlikely friends decide they should investigate it themselves. And together, they are the Marlow Murder Club.
However before long another corpse turns up, and it appears that they’ve got an actual serial killer on their hands. Now this puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might not ever escape from.
“Death Comes to Marlow” is the second novel in the “Marlow Murder Club” series and was released in 2023. It has been quite the enjoyable and murder-free time for Becks, Suzie, and Judith (AKA the Marlow Murder Club) ever since last year’s events. The most exciting thing on the horizon at the moment is the upcoming wedding of Marlow grandee, Sir Peter Bailey, to Jenny Page, his nurse. Sir Peter is throwing a party at his grand mansion on the River Thames one day before the wedding, and Judith and Co. are looking forward to having a bit of free champagne.
However during the soiree, there is a crash from inside of the house, and once the Marlow Murder Club rush in to investigate, they are stunned to discover the groom to be having been crushed to death in his study.
The study had been locked from the inside, so the cops do not consider this death to be suspicious. However Judith does not agree. Peter was murdered, as far as she is concerned. And it is up to the Marlow Murder Club to find this killer before they can strike again.
