Simon Stålenhag is a Swedish artist, writer, and designer.

He likes to specialize in futuristic artwork that focuses on stereotypical Swedish countryside environments. The settings in his work have formed the foundation for a variety of art books as well as a tabletop game.

Born in Sweden on January 20, 1984, Simon is perhaps most recognized for his digital paintings. They frequently depict scenes from the everyday with fantastical elements to them. Simon had a breakthrough in 2013 and after that published two different books about an alternative eighties and nineties timeline that took place on some islands outside Stockholm.

His works From the Warning Globe and The River Harvest were well respected and received in Sweden as well as abroad. Globe was picked as one of the best dystopias written by The Guardian. He was also a 2019 Arthur C. Clarke Award nominee for The Electric State.

The cinematic imagery that the artist deploys has also gotten attention in the world of film and video games. Simon has been employed as a concept illustrator and a scriptwriter for multiple projects. He has appeared in Searching for Sugarman and in the video game Ripple Dot Zero.

The Labyrinth is a 2021 book by Simon Stålenhag. This is a great book to read if you enjoy science fiction and have been looking for something new to read.

The world has been covered by ash and is in ruins. They are the leftovers from a phenomenon from another world that has completely affected the atmosphere of the Earth, making the few people who have survived all of this have to go underground.

Matt, Sigrid and Charlie decide that they are going to leave the protection of the enclave in order to take a journey to the wastelands of the surface world. As part of their journey, they have to deal with secrets from the time before civilization fell. Do they have what it takes or is this journey just too much for any human to survive? Read this post-apocalyptic thriller to find out!

Sunset at Zero Point is a 2025 book by Simon Stålenhag. This is a retro-futuristic dystopia, so if you are a fan of darker science fiction and are interested in a story that takes place inside a mysterious abandoned Swedish military facility, you are in the right place!

Starting in 2024 and set mostly during the time of the early 2000s, this story starts out on a lonely Swedish island. It also happens to be the home location of a secret weapon lab that has been off limits to the outside for years.

The author’s incredible and evocative storytelling and his hyper-realistic art is able to take the reader to a different history showing his most intimate work yet. Simon dives into themes of friendship, masculinity, and sexuality, all told through the lens of being a queer science fiction story.

The story takes place over decades as it follows along with two young men. Both of them are stuck in the past and the orbit of the other. Moments turn into defining memories as the young men go out to make a path through the forbidden zone together.

Set against the author’s native Sweden and based on an alternate version of Mälaröarna outside of Stockholm, this book puts together futuristic machines with its characters and their inner turmoil as they look at a social dystopia, putting together a narrative that readers will not want to miss.
