Sue Hincenbergs is a published Canadian author.
She is a former television producer who has worked on various award-winning programs. She has done work on everything from sitcoms to game shows to award shows to lifestyle and more. She also worked to oversee content for two national daily shows, which includes Canada’s longest running morning show. She also lent her expertise and talent to live music specials as well as writing.
Her efforts in writing resulted in the 2025 dark crime debut The Retirement Plan. The book was acquired in six figure deals in the U.K. and then the U.S. and Canada, and then was quickly picked up by many different foreign territories for the rights to translation. The film rights have also been optioned by a Hollywood studio that has A-list producers who are seasoned at the helm.
The book tells the story of three girlfriends who are in their sixties who start to realize that the only thing that is between them and living in a beachfront retirement condo are their husbands. Many people think of this, but the wives come up with a brainstorm that they intend to follow through on– hiring a hitman that will take out these guys, not realizing that their spouses have come up with the same idea and hired the same guy to take on their job as well.
Today Sue is married and resides in Toronto with her husband, who is very much alive. They share their life with Kramer, their scruffy rescue dog, as well as the various rooms that are filled with things her sons left behind when they moved out. Her sons are named Jack, Luke, and Walker and they reside in Halifax and Toronto, respectively. Sue always leaves the porch light on just in case one swings by for a visit.
Her career in writing began in July of 2020. Sue had six weeks off between various shows. She had always wanted to write a novel and knew that if she didn’t write it then she might never do it. Knowing that if she didn’t write it, nothing would happen, she decided to get going and start writing.
Later in time with a few manuscripts and over a hundred agent rejections, she started working on a new novel in January of 2023. She worked at it while also working full-time on The Juno Awards. When everything wrapped in April, Sue decided that it was time to not take on another show but invest in herself instead.
Sue started writing and committed to hitting the keyboard. Just a few months after that, Sue had a new novel as well as a new mantra in play, which was ‘shoot for the stars’! However, tracking down an agent turned out to be an entirely different skill set. She has written posts about this topic on her site called ‘How I Got A Book Deal’ Parts 1 & 2. Sue eventually found publishers who had an acceptance of her manuscript and an enthusiasm for it that extended beyond even the author’s wildest hopes.
While writing her first book, Sue recounts that the story played out in her head ‘like a movie’. She is of course very happy now that the film rights have been acquired by a prestigious studio that intends to bring this fascinating story to the big screen!
Sue says that she could not have written this book without being supported by her husband, Andy. While he was too scared to read it he also knew the plot from top to bottom. She was also supported by her son Jack and her son Luke, as well as Walker. Her first beta readers were her sister Jan as well as Frances and Kim, her sisters in law. Her brother Bob also was a beta reader, who became her top fan after hearing that the book had been successfully sold and made it his first novel to read in some time.
Fans of her writing of work can check out her blog on her personal website. There they will discover a roundup of mini-reviews of what she’s been watching and reading, which is considerable as she admits that she watches a lot of television!
The Retirement Plan is a 2025 novel written by Sue Hincenbergs. Three girlfriends who are in their sixties realize that their husbands are actually the only thing that is between them and retiring on the beach. They then start brainstorming ways to make their way to the beach and decide that hiring a hitman to kill them in order to get the huge insurance payouts is the best way to do that. The only thing is that they don’t realize that their husbands have also had the same idea.
Check out the book that others are raving about to catch all of the plot for yourself and read on to get a summary of what happens. You can then find the ‘perfect cocktail’ or what bestselling author Nina Simon has called ‘well-plotted, good-hearted, murderous fun’.
These women are married, but the three best friends would rather be widows. That is, after they get together and start talking about their lives. It turns out that the only thing standing between them and collecting on the life insurance policies of their husbands is their husbands actually dying.
Pam has been friends with her gal pals for years, and now they are all coming closer to that age where they are thinking more about retirement. She loves spending time with Shalisa, Marlene, and Nancy, and they all have husbands. She often dreams of having the ideal retirement spending time with her friends on the beach.
But when their husbands put together their funds for an investment that ends up going sideways, everything falls apart. All of a sudden, her plans for her golden years are looking as washed up as all of their marriages.
The wives are all chatting when they find out that their husbands all have life insurance policies on themselves– in the seven figures. A new dream starts to come together, and they figure out that the only way to get it is to hire a hitman.
Sure, it’s ethically questionable to say the least, but little do the ladies know that their spouses are also working on a retirement scheme of their own. When everything starts going downhill, they worry that it’s all backfired on them. Can the wives or the husbands come out on top, or will everyone get burned by their actions instead? Read this darkly funny novel from Sue Hincenbergs to find out!
