The Heirs is a 2017 novel by Susan Rieger. If you have been looking for a dramatic book that pulls you right in and makes you feel like you are watching a television drama in real time, this is a great selection for you. Incisive and stirring, this is the story of a Manhattan family who is upper level that eventually comes completely undone when their patriarch passes away.

Rupert Falkes passes away, and he leaves behind him his widow and five adult sons. Then a woman known to none of them sues his estate, saying that she had two sons with Rupert. The Falkes brothers are suddenly put into a precarious state, missing and grieving their father while also feeling that if this is true that it will have been a huge betrayal and breach of trust.

Even though she has gone through just as much of a loss as them, their mother Eleanor appears to be the complete opposite. For as much as they are upset, she is very calm. Eleanor remains cool and is the picture of composure. Eleanor and Rupert created a life together. Eleanor was witty and generous, and Rupert was ambitious and full of classic English charm.

They were a beautiful couple and they had built up something very special. They were so proud of their various handsome sons, each of them blessed with talent. Harry was a law professor, Will was a Hollywood agent, Sam was a doctor and scientific researcher, Jack a jazz trumpet player, and Tom was a federal prosecutor.

The brothers view their identity and their success and being tied to family loyalty, which was something that they thought their father had too. Seeing that he potentially had another family has sent the brothers into a spiral as they try to figure out their identity.

Their mother is meanwhile being very nice to the woman and her sons. It appears that being a widow has allowed her to cast off her uptight upbringing. The brothers are starting to question whether they knew their parents well at all this whole time, or if they were just living in an illusion.

A wonderful picture of a family, this book deals with inheritance, betrayal, identity, legacy and more for one New York family. Straight out of the past but with a modern feeling, this is a classic tale that you’ll have to finish yourself in order to find out how it ends.

Like Mother, Like Mother is a 2024 novel by Susan Rieger. This is an engaging novel about three different generations of women with strong wills who have been shaped by the secrets that are a part of their family’s past.

The year is 1960 and the place is Detroit. Lila Pereira is very young, jut two years of age. Her angry father has her mother put into an asylum, and the abusive spouse makes sure that the young girl does not see her mother again.

Now it’s been three decades, and Lila has taken all that she has to get ahead. She is attractive, charming, talented, and blonde. Lila gets to the top of American media working as the executive editor of The Washington Globe. She puts her career ahead of everything and puts all of her energy into it. As a result, raising her daughters is left to Joe, her husband. She makes no excuses or apologies for it and he seems to be okay with the arrangement, until one day he suddenly is not as okay with it as he was before.

Their youngest daughter Grace is not happy with the situation. She feels pretty abandoned, wishing that her mother would go to PTA meetings more and not put her work first. As she gets older, she is finding that she is full of resentment. She wants to get out from under the shadow of Lila. The more that she resists, the more that it seems that Lila shapes her life.

Grace becomes a reporter who is doing very well for herself and has even come out with a book that is about her mother. But while she was busy writing it, she starts to become aware of the small amount that she knows about her family. She has no idea whether her grandmother passed away in that asylum. She also doesn’t know if refusing to look back is the way that you can make a future. Grace wonders how you can be yourself in a true fashion if you have no idea where you came from.

Going over different generations and full of different characters, this book is a picture of family, ambition, marriage, power, lies and more. If you’ve been looking for something unique to read and haven’t yet enjoyed the work of Susan Rieger, check out Like Mother, Like Mother!
