William Savage is a successful published author known for writing stories in the genre of historical mystery.
He began writing fiction as a way to stay active and keep his mind going while in retirement. He has read hundreds of mystery novels and detective stories in his time and has enjoyed them very much. Another thing that he enjoys is history. It seemed only natural that the two would be combined for him and he would start writing his own historical mysteries.
Savage has put his energy towards two series initially. Both are murder mystery stories and are set between 1760 and 1800 in Norfolk. This was a time of turmoil in Britain with the wars constantly going, the revolutions going on in France and America, and then the large struggle with France and Napoleon that lasted for twenty-two years.
The author set the stories in Norfolk due to the fact that the county is inherently interesting to him. It also happens to be the place where he lives. This has made research easier than ever. London has also been covered adequately by the other writers, and Savage did not think there was a reason why the rest of the country should ‘be pushed into its shadow’.
Throughout the course of this, Savage has not regretted making this choice. He recounts that the period actually far exceeded his expectations in terms of rapidity of change, the richness of the incidents, and the opportunities that are out there for people who have an interest in writing about crime. For this reason the author does not see himself being able to run out of material for his plot anytime soon. He assures readers that they will not regret going to the ‘fascinating world’ that is provincial England in the 18th century.
An Unlamented Death is the first book in the Dr. Adam Bascom Mystery series by William Savage. If you have been looking for an interesting mystery book to read, this is a great one to check out!
Dr. Adam Bascom is the main character in this story. He is in a Gressington churchyard when he accidentally trips over a body. But he never thought that this simple act would have the capacity to alter the direction of his life entirely.
He is a recently qualified physician who was doing his best to try and establish a practice located in north Norfolk in a small market town. He knows that he should be putting all of his energy into his business, but it starts to become clear that the authorities really want to make sure that this death is qualified as an accident. They refuse to do any other investigation that takes things deeper.
The curiosity that Adam has in addition to his sense of justice means that he has difficulty accepting this. He understands that there are a lot of questions that have yet to be answered about the death. The difficulty is that he does not have the standing that would let him get formally involved. He instead depends on new and old friends, unexpected contacts, and his mother to try and get closer to the truth.
Put up against the late Georgian England period, this book sees a country that is about to go to war with revolutionary France. This book shows a land where spies are out there, keeping a constant watch on whatever person that the government thinks is undesirable. The religion is also polarized between the church that already exists as well as a mass of dissenting sects. The Irish question has now moved into outright terrorism.
Bad harvests and weather as well as enclosure has pushed many people who live in the countryside into poverty. The smugglers along the coast offer work that is regular and highly paid, the only ones to do so, helping with unloading contraband. Here as well, the Riding Officers of the Revenue are backed by dragoon troops, and are putting on a campaign that is getting even more successful to try and push out and stamp out the major gangs.
Adam is going to have to make his way through all of it, and is finding different new demands on the way. This includes a family that is being divided thanks to religious bigotry, a teen thief who has become an informer, and a secret section of The Alien Office (a department of the government that is dedicated to keeping an eye on anyone who could be a threat to the realm).
As he becomes more important in the efforts of the government to fight internal dissension and get ready for war, he discovers that he’s going to have to pull on all of his skills medical and otherwise if he wants to successfully conclude the case. Will he be able to do it or is he doomed to fail? Read this book to find out!
The Code for Killing is the second book in the Dr. Adam Bascom Mystery series by William Savage. This is a murder mystery that is set in England in the 18th century. If you liked the first book in this series, be sure to check out the sequel.
Main character Dr. Adam Bascom has been called out to try and assist with a man who has been badly assaulted. Now he’s being pulled into taking on a series of murders and attempting to solve them while still living in a world of violence, deceit, and treachery. Murder and mystery come back into the life of Dr. Adam Bascom, a gentleman physician, slowly but surely.
Adam is bored with country practice and how tedious it is, but then finds himself called to Norwich where they want him to treat a young man who has been assaulted and now has memory loss. But soon more mysteries follow behind this, and questions remain.
The questions are things such as what made him walk alone at night at the river bank? Who killed a King’s Messenger and put his body in the river? How did a secret government papers file go missing, and how could the miller have been killed twice?
Luckily, the doctor is not alone. He is assisted by his friend Peter Lassimer as well as Miss Sophia LaSalle, his mother’s companion, and many different people as he works to get through the lies, intrigue, and deception that make up the code for killing. Can he do it? Read this mystery to find out!
